1756réf. 775R67Not Stated: Not Stated 1756. Leather. Very Good. 7" by 4.5". None. An early English edition of Voltaire's history of the 1741 war bound in smart contemporary leather. ESTC Citation No. T137624.Detailing the war of 1741 between the Hats of Sweden and Russia which resulted in Sweden losing more land to Russia.Voltaire never willingly published this work; the manuscript of the first book was 'stolen' and published under his name in Amsterdam in 1755. Interestingly he never elected to publish his complete copy of the work instead publishing selected parts of it in his 'Collection Complete des Oeuvres de Voltaire'.Voltaire 1694-1778 was a French writer and historian active during the Enlightenment. He was a proponent of freedom of speech and outspoken against Christianity and the Roman Catholic Church. He was an especially prolific writer with his works spanning poetry novels essays histories and plays across over two thousand books and pamphlets. He was also extremely influential on historiography.Published in 1756 this edition was published by the manuscript thieves with no publisher or place of publication stated.A fascinating work. In a full calf binding. Externally generally smart with a little rubbing to the spine and a chip to the head of the spine. Extremities are a little bumped. Contemporary ownership inscription to the front endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with just the odd spot. Very Good Not Stated hardcover

1733réf. 694L47Amsterdam: Jaques Desbordes 1733. Paperback. Very Good Indeed. 7.5" by 5". None. A very scarce early edition of this important attack by Voltaire on contemporary taste in art and literature. Published the same year as the first which was issued in Rouen by Jore in 1733. Voltaire's bibliographer Bengesco refers to the further 1733 printings as 'premieres editions'. This edition is noted as a later in 1733 due to the title page bearing Voltaire's name with Crebillon's approbation dated 1733 to the final leaf. Bengesco n.602 p.162. In the original French. With a bright red and black title page featuring a detailed engraving. This edition was published by Jaques Desbordes of Amsterdam. 'Le Temple du Gout' was published without official permission from the censors and is a scathing satirical attack on contemporary taste in art and literature. Voltaire was the nom de plume of Francois-Marie Arouet. He was a French Enlightenment writer historian and philosopher. He was famous for his wit and staunch criticism of Christianity. Disbound. Externally very bright with just a small chip to the fore edge. Small mark to the head of title page. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright with just the odd spots to pages.
