1777réf. ST20535-04La Haye The Hague but Geneva: Aux dépens des Libraries 1777. FIRST EDITION. 215 x 140 mm. 8 1/2 x 5 1/2". 1 p.l. 303 3 pp. Publisher's marbled paper wrappers flat spine edges untrimmed. A Large Paper Copy. Benesco 1860. Andrew R. Morehouse "The Voltaire Collection in the Rare Book Room" The Yale Library Gazette 17 no. 4 1943 p. 75. Paper wrappers a bit faded as expected slightly defective at corners and a little curled otherwise and perhaps even so A VERY FINE COPY--the text within immense margins entirely clean fresh and bright. This is a remarkable survival in its original wrappers of a work related to one of the most resonating controversies of Voltaire's life and writings--the question of his anti-Semitism. A giant of the Enlightenment and one of the greatest of French writers and philosophers Voltaire real name François-Marie Arouet 1694-1778 writes here in response to "Lettres de quelques Juifs portugais allemands et polonais à M. de Voltaire" a 1776 critique by Antoine Guénée objecting to the anti-Semitism especially as expressed within a commercial context in our author's "Dictionnaire Philosophique." Deeply philosophical and leavened with satire the 120 chapters of the seminal "Dictionnaire" were widely read much condemned and not infrequently burned as they challenged religious authority advocated for toleration and dealt with many social and political issues from an uncomfortable Enlightenment perspective. And there can be no doubt that Voltaire's "Dictionnaire" does in fact contain critical remarks about the Jews; at the same time the author's criticism is extended with equal warmth to organized religion in other forms. In the present response to Guénée Voltaire is nothing if not scathing which in the end works against him. As Voltaire scholar Andrew R. Morehouse wryly puts it the text here expands upon Voltaire's previous points in such a way as to "justify the accusation that he is cruelly anti-Semitic." This work is not exactly rare but it is very unusual to find it in original wrappers as here particularly in such fine condition. Aux dépens des Libraries unknown books
1764réf. 1322Londres 1764. 8vo. 190 x 120 mm. 7 ½ x 4 ½ inches. viii 344 1 pp. Bound with half-title in contemporary Dutch decorated paper boards vellum spine and corner tips. Frontispiece portrait of Hugo Grotius dated 1790 probably added when bound. Some contemporary manuscript notes in the text and on the rear free endpaper. Very nice copy. First edition. Voltaire’s Philosophical Dictionary organized alphabetically and containing his thoughts on European society beginning with a short essay on Abraham and a critique of the stories of the Bible. Voltaire’s Dictionnaire ends with the topic of Virtue where referring to theologians in the Catholic Church his final words are a petition to God. In his most sarcastic way he completes his book with the sentence “Mon Dieu donnez nous souvent de pareils fripons!” My God give us often such rogues as these!. Voltaire had this work published in Geneva by Gabriel Grasset who to keep the authors identity secret created a false imprint stating London as the place of printing. Included are 73 essays on subjects ranging from Baptism to Character Equality Fables History Liberty Religion Solomon and Tyranny to name a few. “Voltaire sought to create a text which would fit in one's pocket and be affordable because "revolutionary material must be small enough for people to carry with them". What he created is a text which educated and amused at the same time.” As you can see by the subjects of Voltaire’s essays the Catholic Church was the target of much of his rhetoric. He wanted to expose the hypocrisy of the Church and at the same time advocate for a more rational God one who allowed for free will and self-examination as a major tenant of his philosophy. There are numerous edition of Voltaire’s Dictionnaire Philosophique but the first is scarce in the market. This is a nice copy in a sound and not unattractive copy. Then as now La Pucelle d'Orleans was Voltaire's most consumed work so it is not surprising to find this volume detached from the its 39 companions. Voltaire's greatest poem but not the one you read in school. With Ariosto in mind Voltaire rewrote the Joan of Arc story with all the wit and critical distance of an 18th-century libertine. The result is that France's sainted woman warrior becomes the vehicle for an intelligent and licentious burlesque. Good and right-thinking people have always found it offensive but it doesn't really care. Nice binding charming illustrations. [Cramer et Bardin] hardcover books

Three blank front flyleaves with narrow faint brown horizontal blemish across most of the page apparently a tape shadow; in all other ways A BEAUTIFUL COPY clean fresh and bright internally IN A PRISTINE BINDING. This ravishing object is a bibliophile's treasure: an illustrated luxury edition in Large Paper format of Voltaire's philosophical novel offered in a binding from a pre-eminent Parisian atelier. The impressive binding stands out not only because of its remarkable condition but also because of the variety and unerring execution of its decorative elements--from the vigorous use of black gold and silver on the cover and spine to the particularly animated inlaid morocco doublures. Considered the best binder of his generation as well as the founder of modern French bookbinding Henri Marius Michel 1846-1925 began his career in the workshop established by his father Jean in Paris in 1849 where they produced distinguished bindings in the prevailing historical styles for two decades. After the father's death in 1890 the firm came to even greater prominence when Henri began producing bindings in a completely new and original style that did nothing less than change the course of modern bookbinding in France. According to Duncan & De Bartha Henri believed passionately "that bookbinding needed a new vocabulary of ornamentation in order to express the mood and spirit of contemporary authors." The "vocabulary of ornamentation" he developed was based on nature the revolutionary "La Flore Ornamentale" style that he unveiled at the 1878 International Exposition. His favored floral forms dominate the present binding both as inlays and as silver and gold tooling. Our binding was commissioned by Paul Van der Vrecken Baron de Bormans an attaché at the Belgian Embassy in Paris and a bibliophile who belonged to "La société du livre contemporain" as well as the "Cercle Parisien du livre." The 600 francs the binding cost would have bought a very great deal in France at the end of the 19th century. Another copy of this work with the same special features and also bound in inlaid morocco by Marius Michel sold at Sotheby's in 1995 for the hammer price equivalent of $31200. 1750réf. 0074571750. First Edition of most if not all the copper engravings presumed. Full Morocco. Near Fine. Hubert Gravelot Hyacinthe Rigaud Robert Gardelle Charles-Andre Van Loo Jannet La Tour. Also various engravers. An interesting collection of copper engraved plates relating to Voltaire and these mostly illustrations from his dramatic works including "Henriade" the most represented of the works and as so happens one of the very few that occasionally still known by non-Voltaire scholars and that might enjoy a production in the modern era "Tancrede" "La Princesse de Navarre" "L'Enfant Prodigue" "Socrate" "L'Orpheline de Chine" "Horace" "Nanine" "La Prude" "Semiramis" "Le Duc de Foix" etc. We believe these are without exception also copper engravings issued during Voltaire's lifetime and all of them date to the 18th Century. The plates we stress were not issued as the suite here; this suite was created later probably by or on behalf of the bibliophile whose decorative bookplate is mounted in the front -- Charles MacAllister Wilcox 1870 - 1932 who was a successful Denver business executive. all done during Voltaire's lifetime. The dramatic works include Bound by Riviere & Son in full red morocco gilt ruling and decoration raised bands turn-ins. 8vo. 25 by 19.5 cm. 50 plates including frontis the plates done by various artists and engravers but Hubert Gravelot is by far the most represented of the artists with 43 of the engravings based on his artwork. Six of the plates are portrait plates one of Voltaire as to be expected the others of Louis XIV and XV monarchs during Voltaire's lifetime Charles XII and Peter the Great monarchs Voltaire wrote biographies of and of Gravelot. This makes the point to us that the Suite of Plates is as much a tribute to Gravelot's artistry as to Voltaire his inspiration. And his artwork is vivid often seething with activity and movement. Not only is he without peer among Baroque illustrators but also the perfect choice to capture the spirit of a dramatic work. The raised bands and edges of the binding have some rubbing. Offsetting of the turn-ins onto the FEPs which we and most will find rather attractive. A few of the plates have an obvious jagged crease mark in their lower portion. Some light scattered soiling including a fox mark here and there. unknown books
