réf. 117621Glasgow Printed by Robert Urie 1759. . Fourth edition; 12mo 18 x 10.5 cm; a little toned front hinge reinforced; contemporary tree calf contrasting red morocco lettering-piece to spine joint and headcap repaired slightly scuffed and rubbed very good; 6 3-149 13pp. An early Glasgow printing of this interesting outsider's take on English society and its people precipitated by Voltaire's exile to Great Britain in 1726. The resulting Letters first published in 1734 following his return to Paris express his great admiration for the comparative religious freedom enjoyed by England's Quakers and Socinians as well as its constitutional monarchy 'where the Prince is all powerful to do good and at the same time restrain'd from committing evil' the implication being that England could provide a model for France's reform p.53. When the French edition was published the following year without the approval of the royal censor as Lettres Philosophique it caused a storm with copies confiscated and publicly burnt and Voltaire again forced to flee Paris. The work remains one of Voltaire's most widely known and read texts which helped introduce Bacon Locke and Newton to Europe's Enlightenment thinkers. It also contains an early account of Newton's famous discovery of gravity passed on to Voltaire by Newton's niece Catherine Barton as well as an early translation into French verse of Hamlet's soliloquy from Act 3 Scene 1: 'Demeure il faut choisir & passer à l'instant / De la vie à la mort ou d l'Etre au neant.' p.173. Widely ranked as Voltaire's most important early philosophical work and 'the first bomb hurled against the Ancien Régime' Babson. ESTC T137639. Glasgow, Printed by Robert Urie, 1759. unknown

réf. 116998Qajar Persia dated 10 Dhu'l Qa'da 1290 AH 30 December 1873. . Single volume illuminated manuscript on paper with fine marbled paper borders in Farsi 141 leaves complete 323 x 215 mm; single column 11 lines to the page written in neat nasta'liq script in black ink occasional headings and significant words in blue inner margins ruled in gold and blue outer borders throughout decorated with fine marbling one fine illuminated opening headpiece later ink inscription to recto of first leaf else very clean and bright condition; contemporary leather over pasteboards covers and extremities a little scuffed and rubbed. A very unusual and early translation of Voltaire from French into Persian. This extraordinary manuscript is a very unusual and early translation of Voltaire from French into Persian. Little is known about the life of the translator Mirza Reza Tabrizi however he is known to have been working as a civil servant in Khorasan in 1846 and spent the years 1853-58 as an interpreter and instructor in French at the Dar al-Fonun. This manuscript is particularly striking for the remarkable decorated marbled borders of many varying designs and patterns that adorn all the text pages. The use of marbled paper borders in a bound manuscript as here is very unusual. Marbled paper was often used to decorate album pages and calligraphic panels from the sixteenth century onwards and was very much a decorative tool elevating the design and appeal of a single artistic creation i.e. a miniature or calligraphic exercise it's use to adorn the margins of every text leaf is a sign of great luxury and decadence. The only other known textual manuscript to include marbled borders to this degree was copied by the same scribe as the present manuscript and was entitled Tarikh'i Iskander History of Alexander the Great assembled by James Campbell at the bequest of Qajar Prince Abbas Mirza; a reference to this primary text is given in the preface of the other manuscript: 'Ibn Muhammad Khan Safdar 'Ali is to produce this text as well as the History of Peter the Great' thus confirming that the two volumes were undeniably associated at the time of production. Although notably the secondary volume was completed a year later and in Kabul Afghanistan indicating that the patron of these works was likely travelling with the scribe and engaging with them as they worked. For more information on the secondary associated manuscript see item 33 in Shapero Rare Books' Catalogue Maghreb to the Far East London 2023. 1949réf. 148560New York: Hermitage House 1949. Hermitage House limited edition of Voltaire’s satirical masterpiece. Octavo bound in full modern morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe / Zaehnsdorf with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands gilt ruling to the front and rear panels all edges gilt gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles marbled endpapers with black and white illustrations. One of 1500 numbered copies this is number 500. In fine condition. Illustrated by Sydney Joseph. One of the most influential thinkers of the French Enlightenment François-Marie Arouet know by the nom de plum Voltaire was a resourceful and prolific writer. His works touched nearly every literary form including plays poems novels theoretical essays and scientific treatises. A forthright and candid advocate of civil liberties he frequently criticized the institutions of religious dogma and classism prevalent in 18th century France often doing so through satire to avoid censorship and imprisonment. Candide has ranked as one of the world's great satires since its first publication in 1759. It concerns the adventures of the youthful Candide who in the course of his travels in Europe and South America saw and suffered such misfortune that it was difficult for him to believe this was "the best of all possible worlds." Indeed it seemed to be quite the opposite. In brilliantly skewering such naïveté Voltaire mercilessly exposes and satirizes romance science philosophy religion and government — the ideas and forces that permeate and control the lives of men. This edition of the Voltaire's Complete Works notably includes the bulk of Voltaire’s previously unpublished correspondence. The Société littéraire typographique was a publishing house founded by Beaumarchais and Condorcet in order to publish a new complete edition of Voltaire's works. Based in Kehl in Baden to escape censorship it operated from 1780 to 1790 they aimed at creating a monumental posthumous edition seven years after Voltaire’s death. To achieve this Beaumarchais purchased the printing types of the great English typographer John Baskerville from his widow and acquired paper mills and presses including three paper mills in the Vosges.
