He sought to craft a shorter dictionary of articles concerning the Enlightenment that would have a smaller format so people could carry revolutionary ideas in their pockets. Around 1870 Edward Trulove the radical publisher and printer of this edition took up publishing Voltaire's dictionary for the humanist cause. He was brought to trial due to his belief in freedom of speech and staunch atheism refusing to swear the Christian oath on the stand. Social reform thinkers like Florence Nightingale frequented his bookshop. This copy is a neat Des Forges Books De Luxe rebind with striking red marbled endpapers. E. Truelove unknown

1779réf. 40966London: Fielding and Walker. 1779. 1st Thus. Hardcover. Very Good in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. A very delightful gem for the Voltaire collector. This adorable little book has been rebound in dark blue leather with blue marbled endpapers. A prior owner has left a handsome bookplate on the front endpaper and has written his name in an antique hand on the title page. The book was printed on rag paper which has toned lightly. There is some foxing as expected but the text is entirely legible. The date of the rebinding is impossible to ascertain but I would guess late 19th century. There is some dulling of the gold titles. As to the contents there is an 83-page section at the back titled Original Pieces as an addendum to the main works. Contact me for more particulars.
