Best.-Nr. A9780231147903Hardback. New. Money and support tend to flow in the direction of economics science and other academic departments that demonstrate measurable "progress." The humanities on the other hand offer more abstract and uncertain outcomes. A humanist's objects of study are more obscure in certain ways than pathogens and cells. Consequently it seems as if the humanities never truly progress. Is this a fair assessment By comparing objects of science such as the brain the galaxy the amoeba and the quark with objects of humanistic inquiry such as the poem the photograph the belief and the philosophical concept Volney Gay reestablishes a fundamental distinction between science and the humanities. He frees the latter from its pursuit of material-based progress and restores its disciplines to a place of privilege and respect. Using the metaphor of magnification Gay shows that while we can investigate natural objects to the limits of imaging capacity magnifying cultural objects dissolves them into noise. In other words cultural objects can be studied only within their contexts and through the prism of metaphor and narrative. Gathering examples from literature art film philosophy religion science and psychoanalysis Gay builds a new justification for the humanities. By revealing the unseen and making abstract ideas tangible the arts create meaningful wholes which itself is a form of progress. hardcover

Half calf 13.5 cm Condition: Boards and corners somewhat scuffed. Some slight foxing Note: The French historian philosopher and orientalist Constantin François de Chassebuf de Volney 1757-1820 is one of the founding fathers of the Black Athena theory. After a trip to the Middle East in 1782 he suggested that the ancient Egyptians were originally black Africans and that the Egyptians of his time were mulats with mixed blood. Volney Some of the central ideas in Les Ruines stirred the imagination of its readers. It predicted the final union of all religions by the recognition of the common truth underlying them all and stated that empires rise if government allows enlightened self-interest to flourish Photographs on request hardcover

Black morocco label with gilt title. = Virtually unknown edition of an interesting work in relation to the growth of scientific and historical knowledge by the French philosopher orientalist and historian Constantin François de Chassebuf Comte de Volney 1757-1820 first published in French in 1808 as Recherches nouvelles sur l'histoire ancienne. A first English edition was published in 1819 by Simpkin Marshall in London; this edition however is not dated and is widely different. Its publication is announced in Cobbett's Political Register volume 586 on 6 May 1826. Thomas Davison was a printer of radical works between 1819-1830 and served two years in prison for blasphemous libel. The work deals with various philosophers mythology culture etc. but mainly with Middle Eastern people and persons in particular those of historical importance for instance Moses Herodotus Flavius Josephus etc. Former owners autograph on front flyleaf otherwise a very good clean copy in a nice contemporary-style binding. Apart from the above publication announcement and one doubtful listing in OCLC with an 1830 date we found no records of this edition. hardcover
