Quarter green cloth over light green paper-covered boards with black titling and illustration to front board illustration to rear board and paper compartment to spine. Pages have slight warping scattered light to moderate foxing and top corner folded at page 146 and 213-216. Folding and small tear to lower edge of page 216 pencil scribbles across frontispiece and chip with creasing to top edge. Endpages have previous owner's markings in pencil and bookstore sticker to front pastedown front endpages have moderate foxing and rear endpages have heavy foxing. Text block has moderate sunning and soiling with light foxing to top edge and lower edge and moderate foxing to fore edge. A few pages slightly stick out from binding at fore edge. Boards have scattered moderate to heavy soiling very heavy wear to paper compartment at spine that is mostly removed moderate bumping and light rubbing to ends of spine and heavy rubbing and chipping to edges and corners where cardboard is exposed. A very good copy clean and sound bound in modern 3/4 textured polished cloth and marbled boards with marbled endpapers. Both maps bound at rear half-title retained. Occasional stains but really a sound clean example. One of the folding plates depicting Niagara Falls etc. has a large and isolated area of toning from an old paper repair to the verso. A significant French work on American geology and geography first published in English the same year in London this being the first edition published in the country of its subject matter. Howes V141. Vol. 1 Tome Premier is sound and attractive with both maps still crisp and unworn. Vol. 2 Tome Seconde is quite worn binding heavily worn; joints splitting; the folding plate of the Temple at Baalbek is split at one of the folds and has remnants of yellowed tape along that fold to repair the split; Binding is almost completely split between pages 222 and 223. French text. The half-titles were not preserved in these volumes but this set is otherwise complete. This first edition was also published in a seldom seen larger format about 26cm. quarto edition. hardcover
