Before Galella celebrity photographs were tightly controlled by the Hollywood studio system and PR agencies; after him shots of stars caught unawares whether stumbling out of night clubs drunk or just shopping for groceries became part and parcel of how we perceive the rich and famous. "My idea of a good picture is one that's in focus and of a famous person doing something unfamous" Andy Warhol once said. "It's being in the right place at the wrong time. That's why my favorite photographer is Ron Galella." Some of Gallela's most famous photographs include covertly or spontaneously snatched portraits of Jacqueline Kennedy Marlon Brando Greta Garbo Andy Warhol Sean Penn Robert Redford Muhammad Ali Madonna Mick Jagger and Audrey Hepburn; often he has paid a high price for these photographs having been assaulted most famously by Marlon Brando and taken to court his pursuit of Jackie Kennedy was so obsessive and relentless that she took out a restraining order. Other celebrities such as Warhol and Elizabeth Taylor who used his photographs in her biography have welcomed his attention. This volume presents more than 100 of his controversial photographs from the past half-century. . 2012. 3775733248 . Hatje Cantz paperback

Over the course of his four-decade-plus career in photography Berndt has erased the routine divide between spontaneous documentary photography and Conceptual artwork. Berndt first achieved public acclaim with his now-famous work Combat Zone 1967-1970 which documented life in Boston's red-light district. At the beginning of the 1970s Berndt pitched commercial iconography of the day-to-day world against the psychology of nocturnal moods with the project Nite Works a series of night-time shots of American and European cities. With his documentations of the anti-Vietnam War movement and of homelessness in America in the early 1980s Berndt put his finger on the unresolved conflicts of his country and photographed them unflinchingly always cutting directly to the emotional content of the subject at hand. Gathering these numerous projects Insight surveys Berndt's work from the 1960s to the 1980s--in single images sequences and series and almost exclusively in black-and-white." . 2008. 3865217257 . Text in English. 88 pp. With 65 ills. 38 col. . 29 x 25 cm. -- with a bonus offer--; In November of 2006 the Neue Galerie New York opened an extraordinary exhibition of the interiors of the Austrian designer and cofounder of the Vienna Secession Josef Hoffman. With incredible care and attention Neue Galerie curator Christian Witt-Dorring reconstructed four entire rooms by Hoffmann: a girl's bedroom from the Max Biach apartment Vienna 1902 a bedroom from the Hans Salzer apartment Vienna 1902 the dining room from the apartment of Jerome Stonborough and Margaret Stonborough-Wittgenstein Berlin 1905; and the dining room from the apartment of the Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler Geneva 1913. Naturally critics lavished their praises on this exemplary labor of love. The Making of an Exhibition serves as a companion volume to the catalogue for that exhibit Josef Hoffman: Interiors 1902-1913 documenting the painstaking process of assembling materials for these interiors and their final installation. In the process of relating this tale Witt-Dorring shows us how a curator tackles the challenge of bringing such work to life. The result is a publication that displays the work of Josef Hoffmann as it was meant to be seen--in color and as a series of fully realized ensembles. . 2008. 1931794200 . Galerie; Et Al hardcover

Texte meist in Deutsch einige ganz wenige in Latein. 47584Camp McCain: n/a 1943. Original document. Loose leaf. near fine. Original one page letter 11 x 8 1/2" in original POW Camp envelop 4 x 6". Handwritten letter by Willibald Hoffmann a Jewish soldier in the army of Nazi Germany who was taken prisoner and held in the POW Camp McCain in Mississippi USA. Written on the official US POW mail-form of the camp dated September 13 1943 signed Willibald Hoffmann plus postmarked official envelope with "Prisoner Of War" printed on front and US Censor stamps examined by 763 on front and back. Prisoner of War Camp stamp dated 13th of September 1943 on back. With signed English translation of the original letter attached. There were thousands of men of Jewish descent Mischling and hundreds more of what the Nazis called "full Jew" serving in the army while their families were exterminated at the same time causing psychological trauma for most of them while keeping it a secret for the rest of their lives. The American author Bryan Mark Rigg has documented the Jewish ancestry of more than 1200 of Hitler's soldiers including two field marshals and ten generals some of whom were awarded the Knight's Cross Nazi Germany's highest military honor. Hitler himself had signed declarations that these soldiers were of German blood. These soldiers often believed that they were helping to save the lives of Jewish relatives. "Many while they were fighting their parents were being deported anyway." Rigg. Some 2300 relatives of a group of 1000 soldiers documented by Riggs were killed by the Nazis. See Bryan Mark Rigg "Lives of Hitler's Jewish Soldiers: Untold Tales of Men of Jewish Descent Who Fought for the Third Reich. University Press of Kansas 2009 Hoffmann in his letter September 13 1943 to Rabbi Max Koppel writes: "Dear Doctor You'll be astonished by my lines because I've lost every connection to my relatives who as far as I know are now in America. That is why I am approaching you confidentially with the request to help me in this matter. My father's name is Samuel Felix and comes from Austria-Hungary where we owned a large dye and weaving factory. My father has lived last in Cologne at the Rhine where he owned a textile wholesale. Due to his Jewish faith the events in Germany forced him to flee. I myself took on another name. Maybe I could ask you to visit me here or to send a representative since it is impossible in my situation to convey everything to you by letter. To facilitate this a permission has to be obtained from Washington. Hoping to get a confirmation of receipt of my letter. With sincere regards Willibald Hoffmann" POW Camp McCain was established in the Granada district of Mississippi USA in 1942 originally as a training camp for American infantry bound to join the fighting in Europe. During the war more that 7700 German prisoners of war were held in the camp. They were put to work in the cotton fields of the Mississippi delta. The camp operated until October of the year 1944. The addressee Rabbi Max Koppel was born in Mönchengladbach Germany in 1905. A graduate of the Jewish Theological Seminary of Breslau JTS and the universities of Breslau and Würzburg he served as a Rabbi in Hirschberg today Jelenia Góra in Poland and Berlin and was an educator at the Joseph Lehmann school of the Reform community in Berlin. In 1937 he immigrated o the USA and was one of the founders of the Congregation Emes Wodzedek in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan. WITH ADDED Neuda Fanny. CONDITION: All in Very Good to Very Good Plus condition showing rubbing wear and light to moderate soiling to covers; and several with the original string ties still attached. NICE SET. IMPORTANT NOTE ON THE NUMBER OF VOLUME IN THE SET: Although Parr & Badger cite 27 booklets there is an error in their calculation: There are 5 volumes in the series entitled Kampf im Osten The War in the East; these are numbered 1 through 5. In the end notes of Parr/Badger The Photobook: A History vol. III 'Kampf im Osten' is listed as one title and then each of the subtitles of the five volumes is listed separately making for one extra title. Thus mistakenly the total number of titles as stated in the text and bibliographic description is accidentally bumped up to 27. The actual number of booklets in the set is in fact 26 as shown by pictures on p. 23 of Parr & Badger Vol. 3. Included in Parr/Badger The Photobook: A History vol. III. Parr & Badger write "The Winterhilfswerk Winter Relief Fund was an annual fund-raising drive by the Nazis - its slogan 'none shall starve or freeze' - to get Germany through the winter months from October to March. It ran from 1933 to 1945 and was designed to provide food fuel and other items for poorer citizens. As charities do today small gifts were given out to donors.among them was this series of miniature propaganda bookks published by Heinrich Hoffman Hitler's official photographer and approved publisher. They were essentially receipts to show one had donated and with the attached string could be worn on the lapel to make it absolutely clear. Some have intimated that the books were also hung from Christmas trees as decorations although this is not absolutely certain and given as 'stocking-filler' presents. In totalitarian states like Nazi Germany where the leader is seen as the 'Father' of the nation the propaganda machine's ultimate aim is to capture the children indoctrinate them and perpetuate the state ideology. Pp. 65-100 and pp. 455-464. Both clean and fine. This copy has belonged to Abraham Pais 1918-2000 - the famous Einstein scholar theoretical physicist and Einsteins collegue at Princeton - and having his name on top of both frontwrappers "A Pais". First editions in the scarce offprint versions of Einstein's last and highly important contributions to General relativity and in which is shown that the equation of motion follows directly from the field equation that defined the geometry."Einstein's last importent contribution to general relativity deals again with the problem of motion. It is the work done with Leopold Infeld and Banash Hoffmann on the N-body problem of motion. In these papers the gravitational field is no longer treated as external. Instead it and the motion of its singular sources are treated simultaneously. Anew approximationscheme is introduced in which the fields are no longer necessarily weak but in which the source velocities are small compared with the light velocity . The equations obtained have found use in situations where Newtonian interaction must be included. 'These equations are widely used in analyses of planetary orbits in the solarsystem. For example the Cal Tech Jet Propulsion Laboratory uses them in modified form to calculate ephmerides for high-precision tracking of planets and spacecraft."Pais "Subtle is the Lord" p. 290-91."The problem of the equation of motion of bodies is the following. The 1916 theory had a classical structure in the sense that there were both field equations the curvature of space-time is determined by the mass and motion of bodies in space-time and equations of motion of bodies the world line of small mass is a geodesic. Are these two statements really separate If the field equations were linear they indeed would be. They are not linear however and Einstein showed in the papers offered that if matter is represented by a point singularity of the metric field these singularities are located on world lines that are geodesics of space-time provided its metric satisfies the equation of general relativity."DSB.Weil: 202 a. 295 both with an asterix denoting a major paper. - Boni: 236 a. 236.1. unknown

1937réf. 187971937. Mixed media on paper. Exquisite drawing of a 1930s concept car. The old established Willoughby firm of Utica New York had a reputation for conservative quality coachwork in 1930 when Viennese born Hoffmann was hired as draghtsman/designer. He quickly moved the company's design philosophy to the forefront of the streamline school translating traditional luxury car body types such as this touring car into the modern idiom. Willoughby designed bodies for all the major luxury car firms. We have attributed this drawing to Hoffman on the basis of a very similar drawing of the period that was acquired in 1985 from Hoffmann's widow clearly done by the same hand and exhibiting the same exquisite touch and sense of proportion. unknown

A scarce and early illustrated comparative study on global religions including American and Asian beliefs through a Lutheran lens—is bound alongside three foundational Lutheran texts. Umbra in Luce or Shadow in Light: Agreement and Disagreement of Profane Religions with Christian Truth originally presented in 1667 as an academic disputation at the University of Jena is a comparative theological study authored by Christian Hoffmann under the guidance of Johann Ernst Gerhard. This work examines Judaism Islam Samaritanism as well as Chinese Hindu and Mongolian beliefs uniquely incorporating references to indigenous American and Mexican religions. Hoffmann describes these American beliefs as “shadowed” reflections of divine truth presenting them through a distinctly Lutheran lens. The text with its Samaritan title Ṭelal be-nahar "shadow in light" features a diverse set of typefaces—Arabic Hebrew and Greek—and includes exotic woodcut inserts a folding plate and text illustrations of various coins. The larger illustrations depict figures such as a flaming bronze idol of Moloch associated with ancient child sacrifice along with artifacts from Gerhard’s collection including a Hindu Bhairava statuette and an Indonesian shadow puppet. Notably Hoffmann mistakenly labels this statuette as a "Chinese idol" underscoring the era’s limited understanding of Asian religions. While many images are borrowed from Athanasius Kircher’s Oedipus Ægyptiacus others directly depict Gerhard’s artifacts like the Bhairava statuette a fierce incarnation of Shiva obtained through the Dutch East India Company by Johann Schelhammer a Lutheran pastor in The Hague. These visual and textual elements combined with Hoffmann’s commentary on Mexican religious practices and a depiction of Huitzilopochtli—the Aztec god of war and the sun symbolizing protection and sacrifice—create a vivid portrayal of 17th-century efforts to interpret global religions within a Christian framework. Additionally an intriguing feature of Hoffmann’s text is its engagement with Asian linguistic elements including a passage in Tamil reflecting his interest in Eastern languages and cultures. Bound with Umbra in Luce are three additional theological works: In Canonicam & Catholicam Jacobi Epistolam Commentarius by Caspar Erasmus Brochmand Trifolium Verae Religionis by Wilhelm Leyser and Harmonia Evangelistarum organized by David Klug. These works were likely compiled together to offer a comprehensive suite of Lutheran scholarship that addresses both scriptural exegesis and comparative theology. While Umbra in Luce examines global religions through a comparative lens the others provide detailed doctrinal guidance for Lutheran clergy reflecting an integrated approach to defending and elucidating Lutheran theology against both external and internal religious perspectives.
