1818réf. 6965This is a volume of the publication "The Quarterly Review" that contains a rare early possibly the first book review of the classic horror tale "FRANKENSTEIN or The Modern Prometheus" by Mary Shelley. 1818; John Murray; London. Volume XVIII comprised of the October 1817 and January 1818 issues. This review was published in January 1818 - the same month as the January 1818 first publication of Frankenstein. The book title is also listed within the table of contents at the front of the January issue and in the Index at the back of the volume. The rather scathing review spans seven pages and was written by John Wilson Croker - he writes "Our readers will guess from this summary what a tissue of horrible and disgusting absurdity this work presents" and ponders "whether the head or the heart of the author be the most diseased." Note: This volume contains two separate issues - October 1817 No. XXXV and January 1818 No. XXXVI.however the title page at the beginning of the volume states "May" 1818 and not "January" 1818.Condition:Some fading to the marbled paper over the boards; worn/rounded corners. The gilt on the spine has partially faded. There are splits along the left and right edges of the spine where it meets the covers resulting in the front cover being shaky though the back cover is firmly in place. Nice interior - the pages are mostly clean with occasional light foxing though heavier on the first few and last few pages. Light musty odor. Some shelf wear along the edges of the boards. Page 1 has a name written in old handwriting in the outer margin. Overall the book is in Good- condition. John Murray hardcover
1818réf. 1078London: Sold by J. Porter Successor to the late T. Becket in Pall Mall 1818. Near fine. THE MONTHLY REVIEW volume 85 containing an anonymous review that argues the newly published FRANKENSTEIN is unworthy of meaningful notice. When FRANKENSTEIN was first published anonymously it received little fanfare and mixed reviews. The negative reviews often attacked its unseemly premise and apparent moral ambiguity. This review on page 439 of the April 1818 issue of the journal remarks on the book's philosophical novelty but ultimately finds it too outlandish to take seriously. A terrific copy uncut in boards offering a glimpse of the contemporary reactions to the revolutionary novel by the then-anonymous author. Octavo. 8.75'' x 5.25''. Contemporary or nearly so paper boards. All edges uncut largely unopened. Index at rear. viii 544 8 pages. University of St. Andrews device and "85" stamped on spine "1818" written in later ink on spine. Sold by J. Porter, Successor to the late T. Becket, in Pall Mall unknown

The preface was provided by Richard Garnett 1835-1906 a key figure in the "new energetic phase in the editing of Shelley which began in the 1860s and 1870s" Rossington p. 653. Garnett spent his entire career working for the British Museum library during which he also pursued his own literary ambitions. In Io in Egypt and Other Poems 1859 he included a composition in honour of Shelley's memory "which appears to have given Garnett an introduction to the poet's son Sir Percy Florence Shelley and his wife Jane who was protective of her father-in-law's reputation" ODNB. This volume is dedicated to her. Garnett became a close ally of the couple and an active participant in their championing of the late Shelley. 1818réf. 7290This is a volume of the publication "THE BRITISH CRITIC" that contains a rare early 1st edition book review of the classic horror tale "FRANKENSTEIN or The Modern Prometheus" by Mary Shelley. 1818; F.C. and J. Rivington; London. Volume IX comprised of six monthly issues January through June. Within the April issue is an anonymous scathing review of "Frankenstein" published only a few months after the January 1818 1st printing of the novel. "Frankenstein" is also listed within the "Table of Books Reviewed" at the front as well as within the "Index" at the back. Three-quarter leather binding with gilt lettering on the spine. The rather lengthy review spans seven pages and was quite harsh. "We need scarcely say that these volumes have neither principle object nor moral; the horror which abounds in them is too grotesque and bizarre ever to approach near the sublime and when we did not hurry over the pages in disgust we sometimes paused to laugh outright: and yet we suspect that the diseased and wandering imagination which has stepped out of all legitimate bounds to frame these disjointed combinations and unnatural adventures might be disciplined into something better." .as well as inarguably sexist: "The writer of it is we understand a female; this is an aggravation of that which is the prevailing fault of the novel; but if our authoress can forget the gentleness of her sex it is no reason why we should; and we shall therefore dismiss the novel without further comment." Condition: There are some stains on the covers. Shelf wear to the edges of the boards. Worn cover corners. The top and bottom edges of the spine are worn. Both covers have partially split from the spine and are loose and shaky and holding only by strings. Nice interior - the pages are mostly clean with only some foxing to the first few and last few pages. "Bath Public Reference Library" label affixed to the front pastedown. Overall the book is in Fair condition due to the covers being loose. F.C. and J. Rivington hardcover
