With separate half-titles to each book and the early nineteenth century trade ticket of Berard & Mondon 'French Spanish Italian Books etc' of New York. French issue of the major work of Alessandro Tassoni Modena 1565-1635. First published in 1614 this mock-heroic poem which translates loosely as 'the captured bucket' uses the theft of a well-bucket to satirise petty warfare between the towns of Modena and Bologna. The satire belongs to the same category as the ancient 'Battle of the Frogs and Mice' de Vega's 'Gatomaquia' Boileau's 'Lutrin' and Pope's 'Rape of the Lock'. 'The poem is pervaded by an exuberant satirical and often brilliant humour. There are passages in which the humour is sustained and cumulative and others in which an apparent seriousness finds its climate in a sudden hilarious absurdity' Wilkins 'Italian Literature' pp. 298-9. THIS EDITION IS RARE. Seguin, Avignon, hardcover

EDWARD VESEY BLIGH'S COPY WITH HIS SIGNATURE ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. A NOTABLE COPY OF ONE OF KEIGHTLEY'S FINEST CLASSICAL COMMENTARIES. Remembered today primarily for his 'Fairy Mythology' 1828 Thomas Keightley 1789-1872 was also a classical historian and scholar of note; his editions of Greek and Roman texts were produced mainly from Trinity College Dublin. His 'Fasti' is based on the Krebs text and Keightley notes the most important variant readings of the fifty-eight collated MSS of the poem together with not unnaturally appropriate references to his own 'Mythology of Greece and Italy' published eight years previously. The edition received several laudatory reviews notably in the 'Gentleman's Magazine' and was adopted for use by at least one major public school. The Hon. Edward Vesey Bligh brother to 6th Earl of Darnley was vicar of Birling in Kent and Chairman of the Prayer Book Revision Society Whittaker and Co., unknown

First and Sole Edition on laid paper some very mild age-staining; late eighteenth century full calf neatly rebacked in calf to style original leather label gilt preserved red edges a remarkably fresh crisp copy. With the engraved armorial bookplate of a town museum and the donor's original signed presentation slip on front paste-down. Scapula's 'Lexicon' was first published by Henri Stephanus in 1557. This Appendix is dedicated to Anthony Askew 1722-1774 founder of the Bibliotheca Askeviana and an eminent Classical scholar educated at Emmanuel College Cambridge and at Leiden. He became MD in 1750 and was appointed physician to St. Bartholomew's and Christ's hospitals and registrar of the College of Physicians. Himself the author of a manuscript volume of Greek inscriptions his outstanding library was sold by Baker & Leigh in 1775. See Quaritch DEBC p. 323. 'Askew's house was crowded with books up to the garrets. The collection was chiefly Classical and it was its possessor's aim to have every edition of a Greek author' Sale catalogue of the Bibliotheca Askeviana. Sive Catalogus Librorum Rarissimorum Baker & Leigh 1775. The sale of his library lasted twenty days and realised a total of £3993 0s 6d; the principal purchasers were Dr. Hunter Mr. Cracherode the British Museum and the kings of England and of France. Askew's manuscripts presumably including those pertinent to the present work were catalogued separately; their sale took place in 1785. The sale catalogue indicates that an appendix to Scapula's Lexicon was edited by Dr. Chas Burney in 1789 so it is likely that the present work is the title referred to. Charles Burney 1757-1817 classical scholar was the son of Charles Burney the musician and musicologist. Since Burney the younger published numerous tracts and papers relating to Greek literature he could well be the author but we have been unable to verify this attribution from any other source. Extremely scarce. [Printed by] J. Nichols [for] George Leigh and John Sotheby, hardcover
