"'Yadigar-i Istanbul', has been selected among 35.535 photographs from 911 photograph albums in the library of Yildiz Palace. The oldest of these albums date back to the year 1857. The photograph albums of Yildiz Palace entirely given to Istanbul University in 1924 at the behest of Ataturk are among the world's most remarkable photography collections. Perspectives of the photographers of that period have been reflected while in the selection of photographs for "Yadigar-i Istanbul". Those who see the "Yadigar-i Istanbul photos will realize the early beauties of Istanbul as well as the great changes it has undergone. As a result of the study made on 911 albums containing 35.535 photographs and on the photographers of the albums, almost 370 photographer names emerged. In "Yadigar-i Istanbul, the names of these photographers and their photograph albums are also available. It is a great contribution not only to the history of Ottoman photography but also to that of world photography. It will lead to new research in world's photography history and probably rewriting of the history of photography.".

The exhibition highlights the orientalist trend in Polish painting, as well as drawings and graphic arts. The works in the exhibition cover a wide period from the 17th to the early 19th centuries. Among others, the exhibition includes drawings by Christian Kamsetzer of his Turkish travels, as well as oriental scenes by artists like Zmurko and Brandt. The artworks exemplify topics related to the Ottoman world, and to a lesser extent, the Near East and North African regions. One section of the exhibition is dedicated to Stanislaw Chlebowski, the court artist of Sultan Abdülaziz. Works by other artists who had visited Turkey, among them Jan Matejko, Waclaw Pawliszak, Jan Ciaglinski, and Jacek Malczewski, are also included. Selected from the collections of Polish institutions ranging from the National Museums in Warsaw, Kraków, Poznan, and Wroclaw, the University Library in Warsaw, to Lazienki Palace Museum, the exhibition brings together approximately 190 works. The apogee of Orientalism, which refers to a cultural current in Europe centred on an interest in the cultures of the East manifesting itself in art, architecture, music, literature, and the theatre, arrived in the 19th century, when a distinct Orientalist current sprang forth from academic painting, inspired first and foremost by the cultures of the Islamic countries of the Middle East and North Africa, as well as of Moorish Spain. In the specific case of Poland, interest in the Orient goes back to medieval times; a natural result of her geographic location, which rendered Poland particularly susceptible to influences from the East. To a large extent, this period in Polish history was defined by successive wars with the Ottomans, and it left an indelible trace in culture. A variety of equestrian types, generic skirmishes and great historic battles were depicted many times by various skilled artists, as well as Oriental characters, landscapes, and genre scenes -first and foremost of the harem. The latter subject matter, popular among audiences, was often taken up by painters who had never been to the East themselves. Exhibition catalogue presents works by the artists among them Jan Matejko, Waclaw Pawliszak, Jan Ciaglinski, Jacek Malczewski, and especially Stanislaw Chlebowski, the court artist of Sultan Abdülaziz, are included, and also sheds light on the artistic influences of Poland's cultural interaction with the East, different from the Western Orientalist approach, through history, diplomacy, battles and travellers.

Youssouf: Types et charges, 1884 (reprint of Yusuf Franko Bey's original caricature album): 56 p., fully color ills.; Youssouf Bey: The charged portraits of fin-de-siecle Pera.: 119, [1] p., color ills. 500 copies were printed. All copies is numbered. Contents: It includes the following articles: Ömer M. Koc "Preface"; Bahattin Öztuncay "Editor's Foreword"; Sinan Kuneralp, "Yusuf Franko Kusa Pasa and His Kinsmen: A Melkite Family in The Service of The Ottoman Empire"; Guillaume Doizy, "Yusuf Bey: The Dificult Experience of Caricature"; K. Mehmet Kentel, "Drawing cosmopolitan Pera, Drawing on Yusuf Bey's Caricatures"; Sinan Kuneralp, "Appendix: Who is who in Yusuf Franko Pasa's Album an annotated list". The caricature album of Yusuf Franko Kusa Bey, the late 19th century Ottoman bureaucrat, Minister of Foreign Affairs, governor general, man of society who was also a playful caricaturist, is exhibited for the first time. "The Characters of Yusuf Franko: An Ottoman Bureaucrat's Caricatures" displays for the first time the caricatures that Yusuf Franko compiled in an album between 1884-1896, that interact with the European caricature tradition. Through the exhibited caricatures, the visitors meet satirically charged portraits of wealthy capitalists, members of high society, Ottoman soldiers, Levantines, artists and diplomats of the late 19th century. The caricatures offer the spectators the opportunity to observe the colorful social networks, especially those of the Beyoglu / Pera quarter, which Yusuf Franko himself belonged to, and the global locales of Istanbul. By following the characters in their caricatures and the places they belong, the exhibition emphasizes how the Galata¿Beyoglu axis became a financial and diplomatic center as well as a frequent destination of international culture and arts. The exhibition, which mainly tries to evaluate the works of Yusuf Franko from the perspective of space and social networks, also touches on the significant places of the period such as the Naum Theater and it also serves as a reminder of those locales, which no longer exist and hence which have not found their way onto the album. Focusing on Yusuf Franko, the innovative caricaturist of his time and on his works, the exhibition "The Characters of Yusuf Franko: An Ottoman Bureaucrat¿s Caricatures" deals with the prominence of the Franko Kusa family within the Ottoman Empire, and with the history of the caricature in Europe. The exhibition also narrates the long trek of the album through various countries and the tale of its return to Beyoglu. In addition to the album and caricatures of Yusuf Franko Kusa, relevant photographs, documents and publications from various collections and especially from Ömer M. Koç Collection are featured in the exhibition.

Four centuries of diplomatic and economic relations between Turkey & the Netherlands, (1612-2012). In memory of Cornelius Haga. [With a CD]. This book (as well as the attached Istanbul Memoirs of the First Dutch Ambassador Cornelius Haga and the Ottoman Empire¿s official records and his Register Book about his activites in Istanbul) is a very timely contribution to the field, which once again illustrates the importance of studying the Ottoman history as world history. Halil Inalcik, Bilkent University. This book provides a fresh interpretation of the historical relations between these two important powers and also Turkey-Europe relations. In the foreword, Halil INALCIK, a prominent global historian, underlines the joint Ottoman-Dutch role in shaping the European and the World history. In the following chapter, Levent KIRVAL focuses on the history of the economic and political relations between Turkey and the European powers, and he particularly focuses on the economic and cultural interactions between the Turks and the Europeans. Subsequently, Bülent ARI, first gives brief information about the phases of Dutch revolt which started in 1567 against the Spanish oppression and then evaluates the political atmosphere of the period and the conflicts between the European states. Next, Mustafa GÜLEC evaluates the interpretations of various scholars concerning the early Ottoman-Dutch relations and gives an overall atmosphere of the commercial relations of individual entrepreneurs before the grant of Dutch capitulations. Followingly, Mehmet BULUT focuses on the commercial activities in the Mediterranean in the 17th and 18th century. Consequently, Mehmet TÜTÜNCÜ has an interesting chapter under the title "Grand Dutch Admiral Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter¿s Mediterranean Expedition and the Peace Treaties He Concluded in 1662 with Ottoman Algeria". With CD entitled "Memoir and Register Book of Cornelis Haga First Dutch Ambassador in Istanbul".

From travel posters to cigarette packs, from postcards to ornaments, from advertisements to comic strips, the Orient has often been turned by the West into yet another commodity for mass consumption. A closer look at the way in which the Orient was represented in Western consumer societies reveals a number of images and stereotypes revolving around four major themes: exoticism, ethnography, eroticism, and history. From the late nineteenth century to our times, these images have greatly evolved, from rough clichés to more neutral visions. Nevertheless, the attraction exerted by the Orient on the greater public continues unabated, even in Turkey, where almost two centuries of Westernization has ended up creating the very particular phenomenon of "Oriental Orientalism". Compiling the visual odyssey of our beloved borough of Üsküdar, spanning 500 years from the 1420s up until the 1950s, "The golden city" album aims at presenting the pertinent documents of the historical heritage that Üsküdar possesses. The paintings, etchings, photographs, postcards, and maps incorporated into the book all function to adequately and efficiently reflect and convety a semblance of the likeness of the past times pertaining to the "Eternal city" Üsküdar (Scutari) the our present day, and carry them forward to to posterity. Each page of this book-album ensures the remembrance of an exalted glory and an enduring magnificence of the bygone epochs, and, in a sense, successfully attempts to recreate the memory of a living metropolis.
