1805réf. SET25-F-4London : F. C. and J. Rivington 1805. Leather. Very Good. 8" by 5";. None. A set of the poetical works of Edmund Spenser widely regarded as one of the greatest English poets. Containing all his best-known poetry including The Faerie Queen April and Astrophel. Spenser's masterpiece is an extensive poem The Faerie Queene. The first three books of The Faerie Queene were published in 1590 and a second set of three books were published in 1596. This extended epic poem deals with the adventures of knights dragons ladies in distress etc. yet it is also an extended allegory about the moral life and what makes for a life of virtue. With engraved frontispiece of Spenser to Volume I. Spenser was called a Poet's Poet and was admired by William Wordsworth John Keats Lord Byron and Alfred Lord Tennyson among others. The language of his poetry is purposely archaic reminiscent of earlier works such as The Canterbury Tales of Geoffrey Chaucer and Il Canzoniere of Francesco Petrarca whom Spenser greatly admired. Spenser's Epithalamion is the most admired of its type in the English language. It was written for his wedding to his young bride Elizabeth Boyle. The poem consists of 365 long lines corresponding to the days of the year; 68 short lines representing the sum of the 52 weeks 12 months and 4 seasons of the annual cycle; and 24 stanzas corresponding to the diurnal and sidereal hours. Complete in eight volumes. Rebound in half-morocco bindings with marbled boards and original spine labels. Externally smart with some minor wear to the spines and some sunfading to the boards. A VERY PLEASING COLLECTION OF THE POETRY OF ONE OF ENGLAND’S GREATEST LITERARY MASTERS Edmund Spenser who stands with the likes of William Shakespeare and John Milton in the history of English poetry. Spenser was known to his contemporaries as "the prince of poets” and was said by them to be "as great in English as Virgil in Latin”. He was greatly preferred over Shakespeare by Queen Elizabeth and many others of the day. He left behind him masterful essays in every genre of poetry from pastoral and elegy to epithalamion and epic. A century later John Milton would call Spenser "a better teacher than Aquinas” and was greatly influenced by him. Since then generations of readers have admired his subtle use of language his imagination his immense classical and religious learning and "his unerring ability to synthesize and ultimately to delight”. This is the handsomely bound Pickering printing of Spenser’s great works. THE FAERIE QUEEN is Spenser’s best known work and arguably his best. It is especially notable for its form: it was the first work written in what is now called Spenserian stanza and is also one of the longest poems in the English language. An allegorical work written in praise of Queen Elizabeth I it is largely symbolic the poem follows several knights in an examination of several virtues. It found not surprisingly great political favour with Elizabeth I and was such a public success that it quickly became Spenser's defining work. The last six books of the twelve Spenser intended were never written though two cantos noted as the Seventh and Eighth Bookes appear here. William Pickering hardcover
