Two volumes complete on British literature. The only sully to this book is fading on the edges with a few marks as well as the fore-mentioned slight spine fade. A fine nine volume set of this edition limited to 100 copies - Printed for Private Circulation Only. The title pages state "in ten volumes" but in the event only 9 volumes were publised. Fine contemporary uniform bindings by Zaehnsdorf of restrained but elegant half brown morocco with marbled boards and 5 raised bands to the spines lettered in gilt; bindings very good with a little gentle wear only spines very slightly faded. All edges marbled to match boards and end-papers. Contents clean and tight; a little foxing more or less confined to the front and rear blanks otherwise unmarked. A superb set of this rare and desirable edition limited to just 100copies. Provenance: With the attractive bookplate of Claude Goldsmit-Montefiore to most front paste-downs. Claude Joseph Goldsmid Montefiore 1858 - 1938 was son of Nathaniel Montefiore and the great nephew of Sir Moses Montefiore. Some identify him as a significant figure in the contexts of modern Jewish religious thought Jewish-Christian relations and Anglo-Jewish socio-politics. Wikipedia. Engraved frontispiece. Each work has its own title page and for the first three begins the pagination anew though 'The Shepherds Calandar' is mispaginated in three places. 2A-Z4 Kk mismarked K Nn mismarked NAa-Zz4Aaa-Zzz4Aaaa-Iiii4Kkkk Aaaaa-Ccccc4. Laves A3 and A4 have a stain in the lower margin else this is very good. A handsome copy with an inscription dated 1891 probably the date of the reback. Unbeliveably quirky pagination and signature markings but complete. One of two states of this printing: This state shows two bars with catchword 'Calen-" on page 258 followed by p. 359 'Calendarium Pastorale'. A second state lacks the catchword has 'Finis' between the bars on p. 258 an advertisement leaf and then the 'Calendarium'. Carpenter p. 111. From the library of a gentleman who was a rare book dealer in Bangkok in the 1970's and 80's after his military service in Vietnam. ----- -----. The author was private secretary to Sir James Brooke British commissioner and governor of Labuan. St. John had a Malay mistress with whom he had three children. Missionaries and the local Anglican bishop complained of his immoral lifestyle and St. John responded with the present work which also describes his travels and botanical observations.
