1851ref. 26026Title: Black's Picturesque Tourist of Scotland. Ninth Edition. Author: BLACK Adam and Charles Publishers / Compilers Publisher: Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black 6 North Bridge Booksellers and Publishers to the Queen. Printer: Edinburgh: Printed by Neill and Company Index leaf imprint: Edinburgh: Printed by Robert Clark. Date: 1851 MDCCCLI Edition: Ninth Edition The Milestone 1851 Great Exhibition Era Issue. Language: English Format: Small Octavo 8vo approx. 17.5 x 11.5 cm. Condition Report & Description: Complete single-volume regional guidebook iv 542 pp. followed by the intact 64-page publisher's catalog: Black's Guide Book Advertiser 1851–52. Housed in the original publisher's dark green blind-stamped cloth the spine featuring a highly ornate romantic scrollwork cartouche stamped in blind around the bright gilt title. An entirely unrestored un-repaired mid-19th-century survival. Spine Condition Warning: The binding exhibits a significant structural defect: the upper chunk of the green cloth spine covering measuring approximately the top 3.5 cm of the backstrip is completely missing cleanly exposing the thick tan paper backing underneath. The remaining lower portion of the cloth backstrip remains firmly attached preserving the complete gilt title and blind-stamped decorations. The front and rear cloth boards are structurally sound flat and securely attached to the joints. Corners show natural softening and wear. Internally exceptional; the text block is remarkably clean flat square and fully secure on its original sewing. Special Features & Plates: Of exceptional technical interest this copy retains its original large folding map of Scotland fully detached as issued housed securely within the publisher's built-in pocket on the reverse of the front cover and complete with its original functional green silk pull-ribbon. Richly embellished with a magnificent suite of full-page steel engravings printed on heavy stock paper capturing iconic Scottish topography. These premium plates demonstrate the highest tier of Victorian fine-line printmaking showcasing a prestigious collective of celebrated 19th-century artists and engravers. Included are masterpieces such as Melrose Abbey drawn by W.H. Townsend engraved by W. Chapman Loch Katrine engraved by William Miller Ben Lomond & Loch Lomond Glasgow Cathedral Kilchurn Castle Loch Awe and the sweeping narrative scene of Lochleven Castle drawn by G. Cattermole engraved by W. Forrest alongside fine in-text woodcuts like Sir Walter Scott's Abbotsford on page 109. Internal pages and plates are remarkably crisp flat and free of text markings. Provenance & Association Significance: From the historic Château de Lavigny library. This copy serves as an intimate personal artifact of mid-19th-century Swiss-British grand touring. The top margins of the title page and frontispiece carry the contemporary signature of Louis Tronchin 1825–1873. Traveling to the United Kingdom during the landmark year of the Great Exhibition of 1851 Tronchin utilized this exact guidebook to navigate the British Isles. The volume contains extensive handwritten notations documenting his trip: the first flyleaf retains a detailed ink-written scientific field log titled "Orkney Islands — Aug. 1851" mapping out the regional common and Latin classifications of local birds. Furthermore the rear flyleaf preserves a penciled travel directory noting strategic metropolitan contacts acquired during the voyage including "G. Graham Capt R.A. 2 Arlington Street" London and his close compatriot "M. Naville". A rich uniquely personalized association copy linking a landmark Scottish travel guide to the intellectual pursuits of a prominent Vaudois patrician. Price: €185 EUR Negotiable. Value balanced to reflect the missing spine cloth chunk against the superb internal provenance. Langue : Anglais Format : In-octavo In-8 d'environ 175 x 115 cm.
