1855réf. 020227Chicot Arkansas: Chicot Circuit Court 1855. Handwritten. Very good- condition. Unbound. Signed by Authors. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Three page legal document with docketing on the fourth page. Dated April 9 and 10th 1855 in another hand and signed by David Jehu Massingill. Witnessed by Samuel H. Cooper and Sam N. Caughey. Due to the plaintiff's witness living out of state and for other reasons Massingill petitions the court about admitting the affiant testimony of Doctor B. J. Collins in lieu of oral testimony. Collins is a material witness who "made careful examination of the negro in controversy several times before he died and once at length after he died whereby he became fully acquainted with the controversial conditions and health of said negro; that soon after the sale of said negro to the plaintiff said negro was partially diseased and that such disease was one of long standing and which had its origin long before the said sale; and that said disease in a very short time proved fatal and produced the death of said negro and in the mean time said negro was of very little or no value to plaintiff.". A late Antebellum South legal document providing insight into the transactional nature of slavery evidenced by details laid forth in a contract dispute. Chicot Circuit Court Paperback

Book Description: "What is consciousness How do physical processes in the brain give rise to the self-aware mind and to feelings as profoundly varied as love or hate aesthetic pleasure or spiritual yearning .In 'The Conscious Mind' philosopher David J. Chalmers offers a cogent analysis of this heated debate as he unveils a major new theory of consciousness one that rejects the prevailing reductionist trend of science while offering provocative insights into the relationship between mind and brain. Writing in a rigorous thought-provoking style the author takes us on a far-reaching tour through the philosophical ramifications of consciousness. Chalmers convincingly reveals how contemporary cognitive science and neurobiology have failed to explain how and why mental events emerge from physiological occurrences in the brain. He proposes instead that conscious experience must be understood in an entirely new light--as an irreducible entity similar to such physical properties as time mass and space that exists at a fundamental level and cannot be understood as the sum of its parts. And after suggesting some intriguing possibilities about the structure and laws of conscious experience he details how his unique reinterpretation of the mind could be the focus of a new science. Throughout the book Chalmers provides fascinating thought experiments that trenchantly illustrate his ideas. For example in exploring the notion that consciousness could be experienced by machines as well as humans Chalmers asks us to imagine a thinking brain in which neurons are slowly replaced by silicon chips that precisely duplicate their functions--as the neurons are replaced will consciousness gradually fade away The book also features thoughtful discussions of how the author's theories might be practically applied to subjects as diverse as artificial intelligence and the interpretation of quantum mechanics. All of us have pondered the nature and meaning of consciousness. Engaging and penetrating 'The Conscious Mind' adds a fresh new perspective to the subject that is sure to spark debate about our understanding of the mind for years to come. FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 64 pages. -- with a bonus offer--; The art of Islamic calligraphy developed from the 7th to the 14th century beginning in western Arabia spreading south to Yemen and north to the Near East and continuing east and west to Iran Egypt North Africa and Spain. This handsome book demonstrates the breadth and beauty of Islamic calligraphy across centuries and continents as seen in rare early folios of the Qur’an. Noted scholar David J. Roxburgh begins by discussing the Qur’an which Muslims believe to be the written record of a series of divinely inspired revelations to the Prophet Muhammad. He then analyzes Kufic script the preeminent vehicle for writing early manuscripts of the Qur’an; reforms of calligraphy in the 10th century; and the great master Islamic calligraphers in particular Yaqut al-Musta`simi. The beautiful reproductions of folios and bifolios validate Roxburgh’s conclusion that “the miracle of the text of the Qur’an found its equal in the technical mastery of the calligrapher’s practice a miracle in its own right.” . 2008. 0300142005 . From the publisher: "This book argues against the common view that there are no essential differences between Plato and the Neoplatonist philosopher Plotinus on the issues of mysticism epistemology and ethics. Beginning by examining the ways in which Plato and Plotinus claim that it is possible to have an ultimate experience that answers the most significant philosophical questions David J. Yount provides an extended analysis of why we should interpret both philosophers as mystics. The book then moves on to demonstrate that both philosophers share a belief in non-discursive knowledge and the methods to attain it including dialectic and recollection and shows that they do not essentially differ on any significant views on ethics. Making extensive use of primary and secondary sources Plato and Plotinus on Mysticism Epistemology and Ethics shows the similarities between the thought of these two philosophers on a variety of philosophical questions such as meditation divination wisdom knowledge truth happiness and love.
