1971réf. 213071971. Simmen Edward editor. The Chicano: From Caricature to Self-Portrait 1971 traces changing literary portrayals of Mexican Americans from externally imposed stereotypes to fiction grounded in Chicano experience and authorship. Published during the Chicano Movement's assertion of political cultural and linguistic identity the anthology brings Anglo and Mexican American writers into deliberate comparison allowing readers to examine how narrative authority affects portrayals of ethnicity labor family discrimination assimilation and community. Its organizing movement from "caricature" to "self-portrait" makes the volume particularly useful for studying representation in American literature and the growing visibility of Chicano voices within the national publishing market. Simmen Edward ed. The Chicano: From Caricature to Self-Portrait. New York: New American Library 1971. First edition. English language. The collection presents short fiction spanning different periods and authorial perspectives including work by John Steinbeck Jack London Ray Bradbury Nick C. Vaca Philip D. Ortega and Genaro González. Simmen's introduction frames the selections around what the publisher described as the "pain and promise of the Mexican-American experience" while the anthology's structure permits comparison between depictions created by writers outside the community and narratives in which Chicano authors define their own characters environments and cultural values. The volume also includes a selected bibliography of short fiction extending its usefulness as an early guide to Mexican American literary study. One volume. 318 pages. Paperback in orange-toned printed wrappers. Octavo. The anthology appeared amid a broader renaissance of Chicano cultural pride and political organization associated with figures and movements addressing farm labor educational inequality land rights and community self-determination. Simmen's editorial arrangement places literary representation within that contemporary struggle over who possessed the authority to describe Mexican American life. Rather than treating all selections as equally authentic the book exposes the historical progression from sentimentalized or derogatory types toward narratives shaped by Chicano memory language and social experience. Light wear to wrapper edges and corners visible spine creasing without loss of structural integrity light page toning and a small crease at the upper-right corner of the front wrapper; contents otherwise unmarked. Very good. An important Chicano Movement-era anthology documenting the transition from outsider representation to Mexican American literary self-definition. unknown
