Much of Steinbeck's work employs settings in his native central California. In 1930 Steinbeck met the marine biologist EDWARD RICKETTS 1897-1948 who became a close friend and mentor to Steinbeck during the following decade teaching him a great deal about philosophy and biology. Ricketts operated a biological lab on the coast of Monterey selling biological samples of small animals fish rays starfish turtles and other marine forms to schools and colleges. Between 1930 and 1936 Steinbeck and Ricketts became close friends and Steinbeck's wife Carol began working at the lab as secretary-bookkeeper. Steinbeck had already published The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men when he co-authored Sea of Cortez with Ricketts. A narrative of a biological expedition in the Gulf of California the work combines scientific observations with personal reflections drawing parallels between human and marine life. Over 550 species are described that in retrospect reveal that ecological disruptions had already affected the Gulf by 1940. Ricketts who died in 1948 was inspiration for the character of "Doc" in Steinbeck's Cannery Row published in 1945. Steinbeck won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962. Viking Press hardcover
