Goldstone & Payne A36a Generally considered as one of Steinbeck's lesser books this book did become popular enough to be a book-of-the-month selection. This is Steinbeck's only work of political satire and tells the story of an amateur astronomer Pippin who is proclaimed King of France. He spends most of his time trying to avoid any responsibilities and deal with hangers-on with inherited money. Much of the satire is clearly relatable to today's people and politics as well Viking Press hardcover
1961réf. B6468New York: The Viking Press. 1961. In very good condition. . Binding: contemporary light grey speckled paper over board title in black ink on flat spine edges uncut. Lacks dust jacket. Notes: Winter of Our Discontent is John Steinbeck's last novel published in 1961. The title comes from the first two lines of William Shakespeare's Richard III: "Now is the winter of our discontent / Made glorious summer by this sun of York". The story concerns mainly Ethan Allen Hawley a former member of Long Island's aristocratic class. Ethan's late father lost the family fortune and thus Ethan works as a grocery store clerk. His wife Mary and their children resent their mediocre social and economic status and do not value the honesty and integrity that Ethan struggles to maintain amidst a corrupt society. These external factors and his own psychological turmoil lead Ethan to try to overcome his inherent integrity in order to reclaim his former status and wealth. John Ernst Steinbeck Jr. 1902 – 1968 was an American author. He won the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his realistic and imaginative writings combining as they do sympathetic humour and keen social perception.” He has been called "a giant of American letters" and many of his works are considered classics of Western literature.
