1935réf. TO-2026-016Covici Friede 1935. First edition first issue. Cloth. STEINBECK John. Tortilla Flat. FIRST EDITION FIRST ISSUE. New York: Covici-Friede 1935. Octavo. 317 pp. Illustrated throughout by Ruth Gannett. Original oatmeal cloth lettered in blue top edge stained blue; in the first-issue dust jacket. First-issue points present: the Van Rees Press credit at the foot of the copyright page with no later-printing indication; and — the point most often missing — Steinbeck's biography on the rear jacket flap which later printings replaced with blurbs. Front-flap price $2.50 unclipped. Goldstone & Payne A4b the trade edition one of 4000 copies. Housed in a custom clamshell box with gilt lettering to a white leather spine. Fine in a very good-plus dust jacket; some fading to the spine two short tape reinforcements to the verso two small chips and a short closed tear at the lower front edge. The book that made Steinbeck. Three earlier books had passed largely unnoticed; this one — a loose comic chronicle of the paisanos of Monterey framed as a sly retelling of Arthurian legend with Danny and his friends as the knights — became his first real critical and commercial success. The trade edition ran 4000 copies and far fewer survive in their original first-issue jackets. A fine copy in a strong first-issue jacket — with Steinbeck's biography intact on the rear flap — housed in a custom clamshell box is the form in which collectors want this book. réf. STGOBA33New York: Robert O. Ballou 1933 First edition. First printing. An all but fine copy with some sunning to the cloth along the spine. A small booksellers ticket to the rear pastedown but the contents flawless. pp. 8-9 slightly attached from the publisher's glue at the hinge - a defect inherent at printing. In a near fine dust jacket. The jacket spine with toned lettering and a tiny nick at the base. Some foxing to the rear panel and and the verso. Bright and vivid still and wholly unrestored. A beautiful example of Steinbeck's third novel his most challenging and time consuming to complete. It explores faith and the relationship between man and his land themes that Steinbeck would build upon in later works. Quite scarce with only 598 copies initially bound for sale and few surviving in such beautiful condition. hardcover

1957réf. 3236201957. unbound. fine. 4 page single-spaced carbon typescript of an original short story apparently sent to a few friends as a holiday keepsake. This scatalogical tale was never in print as no book house would accept it for obvious reasons. Presentation copy to Nick Cassavetes brother of John with a four word inscription in Greek. Undated but circa 1957. In order to preserve the integrity of its unpublished state we won't disclose the full transcript but can say that the story tells of a peculiar incident occurring in an elementary school bathroom -- it is true to Steinbeck's style of capturing with simplicity and economy of word the fascination children have with their bodily functions. Although today the story would not be deemed "unpublishable" in the context of the 50's it is completely understandable why even such a literary giant as Steinbeck could not find a publisher for it. unknown
