FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 176 pp. ; 113 illus. -- with a bonus offer--; Ken and Melanie Light have embarked on a photographic and literary exploration of a region known for its agricultural plenty--and the marginalization of its people. In Valley of Shadows and Dreams they dig deep into the harsh truths of farm workers' daily experience revealing a deep sense of anger and betrayal toward the destructive legacies of politics bureaucracy and control. The Lights show us once-viable farmland transformed into neighborhoods full of empty tract homes that no workers can afford. We are confonted head-on with the devastating results of foreclosure. We stand in the Community Center food line in Mendota we slip magically onto a midnight dance floor with migrant workers in Tulare and we sail out across the San Joaquin River on a rope swing. These photos and stories capture scenes of hardworking people fighting to preserve their livelihoods and traditions. With an introduction by Thomas Steinbeck and impassioned essays by Melanie Light about the importance of recognizing and rectifying the cycle of employers oppressing workers Valley of Shadows and Dreams uncovers the realities of life in this troubled but vital region that are often hidden and difficult to capture. . 2012. 1597141720 . 1940Best.-Nr. 140948733New York: The Limited Editions Club 1940. Limited Edition. Fine. Limited edition in two volumes #517 of 1146 copies. Signed by the illustrator on the colophon. xxii 2 284; 285-559 1 pp. Bound in publisher's "grass cloth" stamped in brown over quarter rawhide lettered in silver all edges stained yellow pictorial endpapers. Very light soiling to textblock edges else Fine. Binding very square and tight; spines never opened. Housed in the original brown paper-covered slipcase moderately chipped and worn. A beautiful unread set made with great care. Two publisher's slips laid in explain that the book's binding was designed to inspire "emotional sympathy" in the reader before he had even cracked it open: "The 'grass cloth' should if the intention of the designer is realized put the prospective reader in mind of of the parched sun-baked grass of the Dust Bowl. Silver is used for the stamping rather than gold because this is a novel about people in 'the silver country.' And rawhide was planned for the backs of the volumes because it is a leather which might very well have come from an Oklahoman steer." The book's contents are enhanced with duotone lithographs by Thomas Hart Benton a painter and muralist in the vanguard of the Regionalist art movement. Benton was also commissioned to create lithographs to help promote the critically acclaimed film adaption that appeared the same year; his style of populist realism was acknowledged to be a perfect match for Steinbeck's. 1935Best.-Nr. 25831New York:: Covici Friede 1935. 4th Issue of the First Edition. A Very Good plus copy with some light foxing to the boards in Very Good unclipped dust jacket with chipping to the head & foot of the spine a small damp spot near bottom of spine and a closed tear. Previous owner name on front jacket flap. A very uncommon copy of Steinbeck's uncommon second book in a very collectible state. "The Pastures of Heaven" is a short story cycle consisting of twelve interconnected stories about a valley the Corral de Tierra in Monterey California which was discovered by a Spanish corporal while chasing runaway Indian slaves. Enchanted by the valley's natural beauty the corporal names it Las Pasturas del Cielo or "The Pastures of Heaven." The stories are written in classic Steinbeck style; the lives of the families that relocate to the valley are portrayed with a mixture of humor and poignancy. A recurring theme in the book is the pain caused when people try ineptly to help or to please others. The text sheets for this 4th issue are from the original 2500 sets printed by Brewer Warren & Putnam for the 1932 First Edition of this title of which only 1000 sets were bound and only 650 copies sold. BW&P sold the remaining 1850 sets to Robert Ballou in 1932 who published approximately 1000 sets in 1932. Of the 850 remaining original printed sets Ballou published an undetermined number of copies in the third issue. That number was probably in the 500 copies range and in 1935 Ballow sold the remaining copies 350 to Covici Friede and this 4th issue appeared in 1935. Covici, Friede, hardcover
