Identical to the American Viking first edition except for the publisher. . Hardcover. Very good/Very good. 619 p. 21 cm. Publisher's beige cloth with brown impressing. The novel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1940 and is considered one of the greatest American novels. The Battle Hymn of the Republic is appropriate for the endpapers since the phrase "the grapes of wrath" is part of the lyrics. John Steinbeck was so impressed by the work of illustrator Elmer Hader 1889-1973 that he requested Hader to create the cover. Hader eventually did covers for two other Steinbeck works East of Eden 1952 and The Winter of Our Discontent 1961. Goldstone & Payne A12a. HBS 68515. The Macmillan Company of Canada Ltd. hardcover

Typescript 3pp. numbered 1-3 on rectos of 3 leaves of duplicated radioplay typescript struck through approximately 600 words. Typed Letter one page. 1 vols. 10-14/ x 7-1/2 inches. Evocative Steinbeck story or "mood piece" imagining a decorated black pilot returning to his hometown cheered by his neighbors and welcomed by his father in the house he grew up in with the remark: "Son - every black man in the world is going to fly with your wings." In his cover letter to his friend Burgess Meredith who served in the Air Force during the war he writes: "DEAR BUZZY: A different version of the following was done for overseas broadcast to the troops by O.W.I. This is a different version. I don't know whether you would like to use it or not. It has an odd length. I might be a good idea to use it in some one of your shows. If you want it you are quite welcome to it. It was written against a background of music imagined music I mean. Should you desire to use it I think the story itself will suggest the music. Let me suggest however that the music be soft sustained and all of one piece and that it do not attempt to be directly descriptive of the piece but rather of the spirit of the piece. I would suggest that you yourself read it using the beautiful technique you used in "The Forgotten Village" . the soft reading that seems not to be reading at all. This is pure mood and would have to be delivered like soft music. Anyway there it is and you're welcome to it - if you want it." Office of War Information for which Steinbeck worked during the WW II. 1935Best.-Nr. 41022New York: Covici Friede Publishers 1935. First printing. Near fine in very good plus dust jacket. First edition of this oft-comical tale of post-World War I Monterey following the exploits of a wine-loving and vaguely Arthurian group of paisanos a beautiful copy in the scarce original dust jacket. The lighthearted tone of TORTILLA FLAT lifted the spirits of Americans during the Great Depression for whom "reading and the movies were escape. escape from grinding poverty escape from worrying about how to pay the rent escape from worrying about how to find a job" San Jose. Danny and his round table of friends are rarely concerned with any of those issues as they meander through life in Monterey undeniably poor but not experiencing the tragedy of poverty in the same way as many of Steinbeck's later characters. Steinbeck even drew joy from writing the work: "it is light and I think amusing. I don't care whether it amounts to anything. I am enjoying it and I need something to help me over this last ditch" Steinbeck and Wallsten. TORTILLA FLAT did of course amount to something earning the California Commonwealth Club's Gold Medal and a mention in the justification for Steinbeck's 1962 Nobel Prize. It was also made into a 1942 film starring Spencer Tracy and Hedy Lamarr and was one of the top box office grossers of the year. This first edition is a crystallization of the beginning of Steinbeck's career before his works were required reading in classrooms across America. With Ruth Gannett's illustrations nestled throughout the text TORTILLA FLAT is a refreshingly light title in a broad oeuvre. 7.5'' x 5''. Original tan cloth binding with blue spine lettering. Original unclipped $2.50 pictorial dust jacket in blue and black. Blue topstain. Fore-edge machine deckle. Illustrated throughout in black and white. 318 pages. Housed in custom blue leather-backed clamshell box. Jacket with some edgewear mild chipping to spine ends; spine sunned. Binding corners and spine ends lightly bumped topstain a bit faded; tiny creases to lower margins of pages 316-318. A clean sound copy. Covici Friede Publishers unknown
