1940réf. 140948733New York: The Limited Editions Club 1940. Limited Edition. Fine. Limited edition in two volumes #517 of 1146 copies. Signed by the illustrator on the colophon. xxii 2 284; 285-559 1 pp. Bound in publisher's "grass cloth" stamped in brown over quarter rawhide lettered in silver all edges stained yellow pictorial endpapers. Very light soiling to textblock edges else Fine. Binding very square and tight; spines never opened. Housed in the original brown paper-covered slipcase moderately chipped and worn. A beautiful unread set made with great care. Two publisher's slips laid in explain that the book's binding was designed to inspire "emotional sympathy" in the reader before he had even cracked it open: "The 'grass cloth' should if the intention of the designer is realized put the prospective reader in mind of of the parched sun-baked grass of the Dust Bowl. Silver is used for the stamping rather than gold because this is a novel about people in 'the silver country.' And rawhide was planned for the backs of the volumes because it is a leather which might very well have come from an Oklahoman steer." The book's contents are enhanced with duotone lithographs by Thomas Hart Benton a painter and muralist in the vanguard of the Regionalist art movement. Benton was also commissioned to create lithographs to help promote the critically acclaimed film adaption that appeared the same year; his style of populist realism was acknowledged to be a perfect match for Steinbeck's. FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 176 pp. ; 113 illus. -- with a bonus offer--; Ken and Melanie Light have embarked on a photographic and literary exploration of a region known for its agricultural plenty--and the marginalization of its people. In Valley of Shadows and Dreams they dig deep into the harsh truths of farm workers' daily experience revealing a deep sense of anger and betrayal toward the destructive legacies of politics bureaucracy and control. The Lights show us once-viable farmland transformed into neighborhoods full of empty tract homes that no workers can afford. We are confonted head-on with the devastating results of foreclosure. We stand in the Community Center food line in Mendota we slip magically onto a midnight dance floor with migrant workers in Tulare and we sail out across the San Joaquin River on a rope swing. These photos and stories capture scenes of hardworking people fighting to preserve their livelihoods and traditions. With an introduction by Thomas Steinbeck and impassioned essays by Melanie Light about the importance of recognizing and rectifying the cycle of employers oppressing workers Valley of Shadows and Dreams uncovers the realities of life in this troubled but vital region that are often hidden and difficult to capture. . 2012. 1597141720 . 1936réf. 014405New York: Covici Friede 1936. 1st Edition second issue. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First edition second issue in maroon cloth with the scarce earliest dust jacket for this edition lacking any mention of "Of Mice and Men" and with the publisher's misspelled name blacked out on spine with correct spelling appearing above it and $2.50 original price on the front flap. In the Goldstone bibliography this edition was assumed to consist of unsold remainder sheets of the 1929 first edition likely because the McBride bell logo appears on the final page. Therefore this scarce edition is usually referred to as the "first edition second issue." However it seems more likely that Covici simply reproduced the McBride logo as an oversight before correcting their error on all subsequent editions. Either way whether a 'first second issue" or simple the second edition a scarce and desirable book. Very slight fading to maroon cloth former own name in pencil on the endpaper else a near fine book in jacket with only minor wear. Covici Friede hardcover

1936réf. 56139New York: Pynson Printers 1936. Hardcover. Fine. First Separate Edition originally published in The Pastures of Heaven 1932. An unusually fine fresh copy with the corners square and virtually unrubbed. Goldstone notes that the paper supply allowed only 370 copies to be printed. Published for subscribers to use as Christmas gifts the colophon was customized with the subscriber's name following "made by the Pynson Printers of New York at the request of blank for presentation to blank." Fifty copies were so designated for Elmer Adler 100 for Frederick B. Adams Jr. 150 for Ben Abramson 50 for Edwin J. Beinecke and 20 for antiquarian bookseller Howard Mott although evidently fewer were issued with his name; only one is known. Unknown to Goldstone there were six copies for Steinbeck as well. This copy has the subscriber's name The Colophon handwritten in for presentation to the noted printer Carl P. Rollins. Additionally this copy is Signed by the subscribers Adams and Adler as well as by bookman John T. Winterich. All three were editors of The Colophon a magazine for book collectors. Rollins was the first "University Printer" at Yale. Goldstone A2f. Pynson Printers hardcover
1954réf. 377801Salerno Italy: Ente Provinciale per il Turismo 1954. First edition first issue. 30 pp. Yellow printed paper wrappers some wear to wrappers. Interior clean in unrecorded dust jacket with woodcut of "Posetano" on front panel and "Auguri / Dorothy and Truman" printed on the inner flap some light wear along top edge of jacket otherwise its in near fine condition. First edition first issue. 30 pp. This copy specifically states "1954" on the inside front cover and would therefore precede the Italian edition published in 1955 as well as Goldstone & Payne's first English language edition. Variants have been noted see Bradford Morrow's Steinbeck catalogue which bear the date 1954 - whether this represents a different edition or later issue is unclear. Steinbeck's article had appeared in Harper's Bazaar for May 1953 and the Italian translation preceded the English version. This dust jacket is unrecorded.
