1960réf. 28275N.p. n.d. but circa 1960 1960. Hinged on the verso of a board and matted which should probably be replaced. Original wooden frame preserved but chipped and worn. 27 x 20 cm signed on the verso in pencil by the photographer William Ward Beecher. A photographic portrait of John Steinbeck taken by artist William Ward Beecher 1921-2006 a descendant of the famous New England Beechers. How many portraits were produced from this one sitting is not recorded but there were at least two: this one and a similar one that was used in 1961 on the rear panel of the dust jacket of Winter of Our Discontent. This one which apparently was not published was the personal property of John and Elaine Steinbeck and was sold as part of the remains of their estate in February 2020. Betty and William Ward Beecher and the Steinbecks were apparently friends. The Beechers had books inscribed to them by John Steinbeck and the Steinbecks owned a few of Beecher's lithographs and paintings. N.p., n.d. [but circa 1960] unknown

Set in Monterey California Tortilla Flat tells the story of a small band of paisanos who resist the the corrupting tides of honest toil in favor of a life of adventure. It is the story of Danny who home from the war inherits two houses which at once become a haven for his friends and lovers not unlike the chivalric order of King Arthur and his court the Knights of the Round Table. It deals with the band's adventuring multiple loves and wonderful brawls and Gargantuan wine-drinking. "An utterly unprecedented sort of book and hard to analyze in its unique charm" Virginia Kirkus. The first edition has a large period between "talk" and "this" on page 112 line 11. Near fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. Ownership plate to the front free endpaper. In 1941 Steinbeck met “with officials of the Foreign Information Service a newly formed unit of what would soon become the Office of Strategic Services to discuss the future of American counterpropaganda efforts. The Moon Is Down begun later the same month had its origins in Steinbeck’s long-standing desire to contribute to these efforts… Steinbeck submitted a first finished draft of The Moon Is Down originally written as a play called ‘The New Order’ and set in a mid-sized town in the United States to agency officials; they turned it down concerned that the prospect of an occupied America might lower morale. Early in December Steinbeck began revising the work shifting the setting to a generic northern Europe and recasting the play as a novel; he sent his revised draft to Pascal Covici his editor at Viking later in December. The Moon Is Down as a novel appeared in book form in March 1942. A stage version opened on Broadway on April 9 1942 and was published by Dramatists Play Service in New York later in the same year” Library of America. Second issue with the Haddon Craftsmen name on the copyright page and no period between "talk" and "this" on p. 112 line 11 The Viking Press hardcover

From the library of John and Carol Steinbeck with their stamp to the front pastedown. Carol Henning Steinbeck John Steinbeck’s first wife was instrumental in his early literary development sustaining the couple financially and offering editorial input during the years when Steinbeck struggled to establish himself as a writer. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Robert Hallock. An exceptional example most rare and desirable signed and from the writer's library. In his first novel to follow the publication of his enormous success The Grapes of Wrath Steinbeck’s vision comes wonderfully to life in this imaginative and unsentimental chronicle of a bus traveling California’s back roads transporting the lost and the lonely the good and the greedy the stupid and the scheming the beautiful and the vicious away from their shattered dreams and possibly toward the promise of the future. It was the basis for the 1957 film starring Jayne Mansfield Joan Collins Dan Dailey and Rick Jason. The Viking Press hardcover
