réf. 6139The Forgotten Village Life in a Mexican Village Steinbeck John; Rosa Harvan Kline & Alexander Hackensmid. Published by The Viking press 1941. First Edition with "First Published in May 1941" on the copyright page. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall; 143pp. with preface by Steinbeck and 136 photographs from the film of the same name by Rosa Harvan Kline and Alexander Hackenschmied. Buckram cloth boards with green illustration to front top edge green. In very good condition. The Forgotten Village is a 1940 documentary film for which Steinbeck wrote the screenplay; it was the first time Steinbeck had written directly for film. The story follows the coming of modern medicine to the natives of Mexico and is centered on a boy who detaches himself from a society dominated by superstitions. The boy comes to the realization that education is the only tool that can help break the wall of ignorance that separates the remote village from the rest of the world and can ultimately save the members of the small community from suffering and death. The people who appear in the film are actual peasants doctors and teachers not actors. Steinbeck and the film's director Herbert Kline insisted on paying the amateur Mexican actors a high wage thus angering their regular employers the farm owners who then tried to stop the filming until the richest owner gave his approval to the arrangement. The film was shot over a ten-month period in Mexico. The film was originally banned by censors because of scenes in which a mother breast-feeds her child and another in which a midwife is shown aiding a woman in childbirth. After the film's sponsors protested the censors' decision it was reversed by the State Board of Regents. Viking press, 1941 hardcover

1934réf. 1015New York: The North American Review Corporation 1934. First Edition. 3 volumes individual issues November 1933 December 1933 and April 1934 of the magazine each containing the first appearance of Steinbeck stories. Original printed wrappers bound in plain brown paper covered boards the front cover of the November '33 issue and the rear cover of the April '34 issue are used as a paste downs. Signed 'J.E. Steinbeck' in pencil on the top of the front cover of each issue the impression can be read on the back of the November cover that has been pasted down signed 'John Steinbeck' in pen on the title page of the November '33 issue along with a stamp reading "This book belongs to Carol and John Steinbeck" on the same title page. Front board has a watercolor of a woman reading likely by Carol Steinbeck. Rubbing chips to the spine soiling hinges split but holding else internally very good. Ex- Steinbeck nephew in-law David Heyler. A trio of stories that exhibit Steinbeck's ability to explore complex human experience at different stages in life. "The Red Pony" is a nuanced exploration about the delicate emotional journey of childhood. "The Murder" uses violence as a transformative act to initiate a shift in a stagnant marriage. "The Great Mountains" considers the themes of aging the allure of adventure and the mysterious nature of life and death. Steinbeck's early career during which these stories were published represents a crucial developmental period in his literary evolution. Writing during the depths of the Great Depression Steinbeck was beginning to forge connections between individual experiences and broader socioeconomic structures. In these three stories we can identify his emerging materialist analysis that would later flourish in works like "The Grapes of Wrath." Although not yet explicitly political these narratives contain the seeds of his later class consciousness. The intergenerational tensions in "The Great Mountains" the complex power dynamics of "The Murder" and the disillusionment narrative in "The Red Pony" all reveal Steinbeck's early interest in how social and economic forces shape human relationships and personal development. His writing methodology during this period involved immersive research into the lives of California's working people creating an authenticity that distinguishes his work from contemporaries who approached similar themes from more privileged perspectives. 1947réf. 21711New York: Viking Press 1947. First Edition First Printing. Good/Good. A Mid-Century Study in Human Desperation. John Steinbeck's 1947 novel explores the internal lives of a group of travelers stranded on a backroad bus in post-war California. While critics at the time were divided the public embraced it making it one of Steinbeck's most immediate financial successes. This copy features the First Issue dust jacket and represents a key moment in Steinbeck's transition into the late 1940s. It was later adapted into the 1957 film starring Jayne Mansfield and Joan Collins. KEY FEATURES Bibliographic Point: First Edition First Printing Viking Press 1947. The Jacket: First Issue dust jacket with the book title correctly positioned at the top of the front flap. Hollywood Connection: The basis for the 1957 film; a high-water mark for mid-century melodrama staring Jayne Mansfield / Joan Collins/Dan Dailey and Rick Jason. Reference: Cited in Zempel 218 and Allen 624; Hayashi: 4; Railsback: 419; Firsts:17:1 CONDITION: Good / Good The Book: Bindings are tight and square. The text is clean with light even age-toning throughout. Minimal handling wear with minor rubbing to the bottom edges. The Jacket: First issue state $2.75 price intact. Housed in a new clear protective Mylar sleeve. The jacket shows age-toning and significant loss at the spine tips and top corners. Despite the losses the front panel remains vibrant and the critical first-issue flap points are clearly legible. The novel is about a group of people on a bus traveling California's back road it is unclear whether the characters are traveling toward a hopeful destination or merely fleeing something. Although considered one of Steinbeck's weaker novels at the time of its original publication The Wayward Bus was financially more successful than any of his previous works. A black-and-white film version of The Wayward Bus was released in 1957 with a cast including Jayne Mansfield Joan Collins Dan Dailey and Rick Jason. Much of the dramatic action in Steinbeck's novel consists of internal monologues which the film version does not render. The movie was released in May 1957 at the height of Mansfield's popularity and enjoyed some box office success despite middling reviews. wiki Viking Press unknown
