réf. 06569New York: The Viking Press 1947. A Powerful Documentary Collaboration Steinbeck's Stark Vision of Rural Mexico - First Edition STEINBECK John. The Forgotten Village. With 136 photographs from the film of the same name by Rosa Harvan Kline and Alexander Hackenschmied. New York: The Viking Press 1941. First edition first issue. Quarto 10 x 6 7/8 inches; 254 x 175 mm. 1-8 9-143 1 blank pp. Illustrated throughout with 136 photographic reproductions. Publisher's tan buckram front cover pictorially decorated in green spine lettered in green top edge stained green. A near fine copy in the original color pictorial dust jacket. A striking and unusual work by John Steinbeck conceived in conjunction with the documentary film of the same name. The Forgotten Village departs from Steinbeck's more familiar fictional narratives presenting instead a quasi-anthropological account of life in a remote Mexican village where traditional beliefs and modern medicine collide with tragic consequences. The text - part narrative part social document - follows the story of a young boy Juan Diego whose village is ravaged by disease. Steinbeck's restrained almost reportorial prose heightens the emotional impact underscoring themes of cultural conflict superstition and the limits of intervention. The work reflects Steinbeck's deep and abiding interest in marginalized communities a concern that runs throughout his major novels. The volume is richly illustrated with 136 photographs by Rosa Harvan Kline and Alexander Hackensmid later known as Alexander Hammid whose cinematic eye lends the book a powerful visual immediacy. The photographs are not merely illustrative but integral to the narrative reinforcing the documentary character of the work and bridging the gap between literature and film. An important and often underappreciated Steinbeck title here preserved in its original form with the dust jacket-an increasingly elusive survival in collectible condition. Goldstone & Payne A15. 1939réf. 53753New York: The Viking Press 1939. First printing. Near fine. First edition of the Pulitzer and National Book Award-winning novel that made Steinbeck a household name. GRAPES OF WRATH has been generations of students' introduction to the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. Steinbeck's extensive use of symbolism and Biblical motifs also makes it an excellent exercise in literary criticism for both high schoolers and hardcore academics all pulled together with exceptionally lyrical prose. GRAPES OF WRATH was an immediate hit and stayed atop bestseller lists for the majority of 1939. But it was not always beloved: the novel was a lighting rod for Steinbeck both professionally and personally. His portrayal of the difficult lives of migrant workers and the corruption of the agriculture business earned him "constant vilification" from powerful farmers' groups and the book was banned and even occasionally burned in a variety of communities Demott. In his diaries Steinbeck lamented how the novel's popularity "got really out of hand became a public hysteria" leading to the idea that he was himself "public domain" Demott. This first edition with its hyperbolic but prescient dust jacket editorial copy "Perhaps GRAPES OF WRATH is the greatest modern American novel. the greatest single creative work this country has ever produced" captures the tipping point of Steinbeck's career. 8'' x 5.25''. Original tan buckram binding with brown titles and line art. Original unclipped $2.75 color pictorial dust jacket illustrated by Elmer Hader. Yellow topstain. Endpapers with illustration of the Battle Hymn of the Republic in yellow and orange. 620 pages. Jacket with minor edgewear one tiny chip to spine foot. 1946réf. 020854Prague: Sfinx 1946. Second Czech Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine in a Near Fine dustwrapper. Dustwrapper designed by Jaroslav váb. Uncommon edition of this winner of the Pulitzer Prize. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Steinbeck on the last page of text located at the foot of the translator's notes in which the translator Vladimír Procházka includes an excerpt from a positive review of the translation: ".in reading this translation we forget that it's a translation. How many translations can we say that about" The inscription is under Procházka's printed name and is to him: "For Vladimir Prochazka/Thank you/John Steinbeck." Procházka a lawyer and communist was forced to withdraw from his political activities during the Nazi occupation and translated THE GRAPES OF WRATH along with works by James Joyce and Bernard Shaw. In 1946 he was elected to parliament as a communist and helped draft the new Czechoslovak constitution. Steinbeck most likely inscribed this on one of his two trips to communist Czechoslovakia or possibly in the U. S. when Procházka was serving as the Czechoslovak ambassador to the United States.
