1937Best.-Nr. 100479New York: Covici-Friede 1937. First edition. Near fine in a price-clipped good or better dustwrapper with some chipping near the bottom of the front flap fold and a large but faint dampstain. An uncommon play adapted by Steinbeck from his own novel. Steinbeck's stage adaptation condenses his novella into a three-act tragedy ideally suited to theatrical presentation. The play's dialogue-driven format strips away narrative contemplation rendering each character's thwarted ambitions through stark unadorned exchanges that intensify the work's central themes: the impossibility of economic independence during the Depression the profound isolation persisting within communal spaces and the brutal incompatibility between human vulnerability and a system demanding complete self-sufficiency. The inexorable march toward Lennie's death demonstrates how certain lives become expendable when they cannot conform to society's demands. Covici-Friede unknown books

Original color pictorial dust jacket with just the slightest rubbing at the foot of the spine. A near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket. A compelling collection of Steinbeck's World War II dispatches originally written for the New York Herald Tribune during his time as a war correspondent in 1943. Eschewing conventional battlefield reportage Steinbeck focuses instead on the daily lives of soldiers - capturing moments of boredom humor fear and quiet endurance with remarkable immediacy and empathy. These pieces drawn from Steinbeck's experiences in England North Africa and Italy reveal a deeply human perspective on war emphasizing the individuality of the common soldier rather than the abstractions of strategy or politics. The result is a work of enduring power - part journalism part literature - standing alongside the finest war writing of the twentieth century. Goldstone & Payne A39a. 1943Best.-Nr. 249514Firenze: Valentino Bompiani 1943. Paperback. 239p. wartime printing the Milano issue a year earlier softbound in 8x4.5 decorated wraps and a color-decorated dust jacket. Not a bad copy but quite acidic and toned with outermost leaves fragile find tiny marginal tears to early and terminal pages. Cover of book itself is also very toned and a tad fragile. The dj was printed on better paperstock there's a little foxing along joint-folds serious top-edge wear with small chips to the head recto dust-soil but colors are fast and no damage to flap-texts. All things considered like WW Two a good copy. One wonders did Vittorini do the translation while in prison he'd published an anti-fascist novel in 1941 that put him behind bars.
