réf. 06582New York: The Viking Press 1962. The Writer's Task Is to Declare and Celebrate Man's Proven Capacity for Greatness" Steinbeck's Nobel Address - A Private Printing STEINBECK John Steinbeck. Speech Accepting the Nobel Prize for Literature. Stockholm December 10 1962. New York: The Viking Press 1962. One of 3200 copies printed for friends of the author and the publisher. Octavo 8 7/8 x 5 3/4 inches; 226 x 146 mm. 1-6 7-10 11-12 pp. Title-page printed in red and black. Photogravure portrait frontispiece. Publisher's original tan wrappers front cover lettered in red. A fine example. A stirring and eloquent manifesto delivered at the height of Steinbeck's career this Nobel Prize acceptance speech stands among the most concise and powerful statements on the purpose of literature in the twentieth century. Rejecting despair in an age shadowed by nuclear fear Steinbeck instead affirms the writer's duty to illuminate "the dark and dangerous dreams of man" while celebrating his enduring capacity for courage compassion and love. Privately printed in a limitation of just 3200 copies for presentation to friends of the author and publisher this slim pamphlet was never intended for wide distribution and remains one of the more elusive Steinbeck items. Its simplicity of form - plain wrappers restrained typography in red and black - only heightens the gravity of the text within. An uncommon survival in such fresh fine condition and a cornerstone piece for any serious Steinbeck collection - representing not merely the honor bestowed but the philosophy behind it. réf. 06587New York: The Viking Press 1954. Return to Cannery Row - Steinbeck's Sweet Thursday First Edition - Near Fine in Second-Issue Dust Jacket STEINBECK John. Sweet Thursday. New York: The Viking Press 1954. First edition first printing. Octavo 8 x 5 3/8 inches; 203 x 136 mm. x 1-2 3-273 3 blank pp. Title-page printed in red and black. Publisher's yellow linen over boards front cover and spine stamped in blue and lettered in red top edge stained red slightly sunned. In the original color pictorial dust jacket price-clipped with minimal rubbing to extremities. A near fine copy in a near fine second-issue dust jacket with review comments printed beneath the photograph on the rear panel. A warmly nostalgic return to the Monterey setting of Cannery Row Sweet Thursday reunites Doc and a cast of eccentric and endearing characters in a postwar landscape tinged with both humor and quiet melancholy. Though lighter in tone than Steinbeck's earlier works the novel retains his characteristic sympathy for outsiders and his keen sense of place. While the book itself is a straightforward first edition copies are often encountered with later or variant dust jackets. The present example retains the second-issue jacket identifiable by the addition of review blurbs beneath the author photograph on the rear panel - a point of interest to collectors though less preferred than the first-issue jacket. A clean attractive copy of a late Steinbeck first increasingly sought in collectible condition. Goldstone & Payne A34a. New York: The Viking Press, 1954 unknown books
