1945Best.-Nr. CanneryRow1stCannery Row by John Steinbeck author of The Grapes of Wrath Of Mice and Men and East of Eden Hardcover First Edition - First Printing - Second State Binding - First State Dust Jacket Viking 1945. $2.00 cover price inside front dust jacket flap. First Printing since there is NO subsequent printing information on the copyright page. Second state canary yellow boards with blue lines and lettering on the front and spine. NOT to be confused with the wartime edition in blue boards. see edition information below Fine- in Near Fine unrestored Dust Jacket. A really nice exceptional copy in dust jacket. The book itself is just about fine with very clean pages. Dust jacket is quite clean and bright at the front and does NOT have any major tears. Typical edge-wear top and bottom spine and rubbing and nicks to the same and at the corners and some typical soiling to the back of the dust jacket. Overall a very clean and presentable first edition copy of one of the half-dozen major works of Steinbeck. Note on edition/state: The first edition/first printing of this book appeared in two states both released simultaneously. The first state has been determined to be buff-colored somewhat tan-like boards while the second state is canary yellow. Apparently during production the printers ran out of the buff/tan materials for the boards and to meet the publishing deadline yellow colored materials were brought in and used for the rest of the print-run. Purists collectors will contest the buff-colored boards are the most preferable. However they really represent at best simply two states of the first printing not two printings as further printings would be indicated subsequently because the book was popular since copies of both states were released simultaneously in 1945. At the time buyers would have had about a 50-50 chance of purchasing either the buff or yellow boards of these copies. Typically first state copies of the buff-tan variety in near fine or better dust jackets are priced at $2000 while the yellow boards as offered here can be had for a fraction of the price. Everything else the pages the dust jacket price etc are the same. As a collector I am more interested in the condition of the dust jacket rather than whether the boards are first or second state. Shortly thereafter a so-called wartime edition was issued in blue boards. The wartime edition while a good reading copy has essentially almost no premium value on the collectors market. NOTE: All modern books with dust jackets come with dust jacket covers. ALSO: The pictures are of the actual item for sale. The pictures are NOT stock photos. Viking hardcover

1945Best.-Nr. 34551New York: Viking 1945. First edition in the blue binding. 8vo publisher’s original blue cloth lettered on the upper cover blind and on the spine in gilt in the publisher’s original dustjacket the jacket marked Book Club. With a previous owner's bookplate. 208 pp. A very good copy with just a touch of wear to the extremities the dustjacket with a little chipping to the tips and a little rubbing. Due to the war standards in publishing this book did not usually age well but this copy has come through quite well. FIRST EDITION AND A VERY GOOD COPY. The warm and funny story of the inhabitants of Cannery Row in Monterey California. Steinbeck dedicated the book to his close friend Ed Ricketts upon whom he modeled Doc the central character of the novel. CANNERY ROW is a unique blend of lighthearted humor scientific detachment and tender empathy. Rather than featuring a strict plot it paints a vibrant affectionate portrait of a Depression-era Monterey street and its community of social outcasts. Unlike Steinbeck's darker tragedy-driven epics like The Grapes of Wrath this work is largely episodic written as a series of interconnected vignettes. Viking hardcover

1945Best.-Nr. 8070New York: The Viking Press 1945. First edition. Fine/Near Fine. Second issue in the canary yellow cloth. A Fine copy in Near Fine dust jacket. A lovely copy of the book. Contemporary ink ownership signature to upper free endpaper. Dust jacket with some chipping to edges and to one fold. Jacket spine a bit darkened and some dustsoiling to edges of flaps but presenting very well. Overall a bright and appealing copy of Steinbeck's celebrated novel about the Cannery Row community of Monterey California. Steinbeck's straightforward prose follows the trials and tribulations of the Cannery Row community in Great Depression-era Monterey. The novel begins with a singular focus: a group of friends will throw a thank-you party for Doc a marine biologist. But such a venture envelops the larger community and through this larger scope Cannery Row explores friendship community nostalgia and the profound social effects of the Great Depression. Indeed the fame of the novel would help turn Cannery Row into a kind of tourist attraction. Steinbeck had just come home from being a war correspondent and the experience - along with his failing marriage - scarred him considerably. He began this book as kind of an escape both for him and for his readers. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. The Viking Press unknown
