O estudo da antiguidade é tão vasto que pode ser abordado de maneiras completamente diferentes. Na maior parte dos livros que tratam da história antiga o lado íntimo dos costumes desaparece quase completamente abafado pela narrativa dos eventos políticos. Existem de facto algumas obras excelentes e um grande número de memórias e artigos que exploram a vida privada dos gregos e romanos mas nunca de uma forma abrangente focando-se apenas num país ou numa época específica. Esta obra é um trabalho metodicamente projectado abrangendo a antiguidade como um todo e compreendendo as mudanças na vida privada dos antigos desde as primeiras dinastias do Egipto até à queda do mundo pagão. A obra está dividida em quatro temas principais cada um correspondendo a um volume. Os quatro volumes constituem um conjunto completo mas cada um deles traz um subtítulo especial e forma um todo único que isoladamente mostra um lado particular da antiguidade.
