Bullion / Mariposa Co. / 1905.” Photograph good and clear; a couple of small areas of emulsion loss at lower right not affecting the image. Mount chipped with small pieces missing from the corners. A panoramic view of Mount Bullion the historic Mariposa County gold-mining settlement formerly known as Princeton showing its commercial center with wooden buildings townspeople numerous horses and horse-drawn vehicles. prominent sign identifies the “Princeton Boarding House” preserving the older name closely associated with the settlement and its principal mine. The photograph occupies an interesting place in the limited early photographic record of Mount Bullion. Other documented images include a ca. 1900 view of the Princeton Mine a 1914 view of the Princeton Quartz Mine in the California State Library and a 1926 photograph of the historic Marre Store preserved in the Library of Congress as part of the Historic American Buildings Survey. Unlike these images which concentrate on individual mines or buildings the present panorama records Mount Bullion as a functioning community providing a broad view of the settlement during its early twentieth-century revival. No other example of this 1905 panoramic view has been located in the institutional collections photographic databases or market records consulted. unknown

Paris, mai 1942 Tirage argentique d'époque (170 x 230 mm). unknown

The work is divided into three parts the first focussing on the history of woodcutting the second on the technical aspects and the third is a supplement. The author was one of the best woodcut artists of his time. The present work was based on his personal experience and offered the finest specimen of his own work as a woodcutter including some beautiful and rare woodcut chiaroscuro prints. Jean Michel Papillon 1698-1776 enjoyed great fame as a woodcutter and his workshop included many noble pupils. Woodcutting was much "en vogue" at the time and following the example of Madame de Pompadour woodcutting was practiced by many members of Paris High Society including the Counts de Breteuil De Forbin La Barden Lalive de Jully the Marquisses de Montmirail De Chamont and De Rouvre the Duke de Chevreuse the Duchess de Luynes the Princess Rohan-Rochefort etc. Papillon also worked for the Imprimerie Royal and made a considerable number of woodcut vignettes and devices for libraries and publishers. His collected woodcuts were left to the Cabinet des Estampes. With a bookplate a black shield with the monogram "AD" mounted on the front pastedown of both volumes and a later annotation on the first flyleaf of the second volume "Une comète se montrera en 1834 ou 1833". Full blond calf double gilt fillet around the covers gilt-stamped coat of arms richly decorated ribbed spines red and green morocco lettering-pieces gilt edges. Armorial binding circa 1840. 196 x 123 mm. Extremely rare first edition of this fundamental treatise on wood engraving. "A much sought-after work" Brunet. Unique copy enriched with three original plates by Zanetti after Le Parmesan wood-engraved and executed in monochrome. The work is divided into a historical and a technical section. Papillon "proposes several solutions to improve both the spotting of cameos and their printing" Anatomie de la couleur. He advises against using the letterpress for color printing preferring the intaglio press. The illustrations includes a portrait of the author engraved by Caron a monochrome depicting Saint André a suite of 5 woodcuts showing the decomposition of colors in a monochrome 20 full-page woodcuts included in the pagination and several wood-engraved vignettes headpieces initials marks and tailpieces. Jean-Michel Papillon 1698-1776 was the theorist and undisputed master of woodcutting in 18th-century France. He contributed to the revival of this technique which in the previous century was mainly reserved for the illustration and decoration of popular prints. Well-known as an ornamentalist Papillon engraved numerous typographic headpieces notably for official prints by the Imprimerie Royale as well as tailpieces for large luxury editions such as La Fontaine's Fables illustrated by Oudry. He also wrote all the articles concerning his art for Diderot and d'Alembert's Encyclopédie. Jean Michel Papillon 1698-1776 was considered in the Eighteenth Century to be the only learned wood engraver an art long considered as minor. He was the author of an important Traité historique et pratique de la gravure en bois 1766 which was the source of much information and from 1747 he collaborated closely with the editors of the Encyclopédie providing the décorative letters vignettes fleurons and tailpieces in the dictionary and the volumes of illustrations. This contribution which sometimes seems to have led to tensions has rarely been emphasized or studied even though the engraver provides in his Treatise mimerons dues about his contribution and choices of illustrations for the Encyclopédie. Papillon also signed some articles but not only the ones we would expect and his relations with Diderot seem to have been difficult. A precious copy enriched with a folded autograph letter bound in blond calf with the coat of armsof Guillaume Gabriel Pavée de Vendeuvre born in Paris in 1779 deputy then peer of France. Auditor at the Conseil d'État under the First Empire he became Maître des requêtes under the Restoration. He was General Councillor and Member of Parliament for Aube from 1820 to 1824 and from 1827 to 1837 sitting in opposition to the Restoration. He was one of the signatories of the 221 Address. A supporter of the July Monarchy he was a peer from 1837 to 1848. " On recherche beaucoup cet ouvrage ". Brunet.
