1862ref. 1862SansonEXECUTIONS IN FRANCE Sept Générations d'Exécuteurs 1688-1847: Mémoires des Sanson mis en ordre rédigés et publiés par H. Sanson. Paris: Dupray de la Mahérie 1862-1863. Six volumes each complete with half-title and probably large-paper copies but IV 67/68 with partial loss in lower blank. Tall 8vo unusually clean with hardly any spotting; gilt-stamped leather spines with matching black boards. First edition of this apocryphal memoir of the Sanson family based on family diaries and correspondence by the journalist D'Olbreuse detailing all the major executions from the late 17th century thru middle 19th century. The most famous member of the family is Charles-Henri Sanson 1739–1806 who served as the chief executioner of Paris during the French Revolution. He executed thousands of people—including King Louis XVI Marie Antoinette Danton and Robespierre. He was also closely involved in testing and adopting the guillotine as a more humane method of execution. The family's tenure ended in 1847 when Charles-Henri's grandson Henri-Clément Sanson was dismissed from office and arrested after pawning the family's official guillotine to cover mounting debts and gambling losses. Very good condition apart from some light foxing mild creasing a small tear at the right edge of the sheet and a few small brown stains at the far left side of the image. A rare example of an original watercolour design for porcelain by the Samson factory of Paris. This finished design was intended as a reference source from which the porcelain painters could work using the design as a guide for the colours and image to be transformed from paper into fine porcelain. The French porcelain manufactory of Samson & Cie. was established by "Edmé Samson b. Paris 1810; d. Paris 1891 at 7 Rue Vendôme later Rue Béranger in Paris. The intention of the firm was to reproduce ceramics from museums and private collections and it claimed that all such reproductions would be distinctly marked to avoid confusion with the originals. In 1864 the factory was moved to Montreuil by Samson's son Emile Samson 1837-1913. The range of wares included copies of 18th-century porcelain from such factories as Sèvres Chelsea Meissen and Derby Chinese export-wares especially armorial wares decorated with famille rose colours and mugs decorated with the Fitzhugh pattern Delftware Iznikware maiolica and faience." Of George Murgatroyd Woodward 1760-1809 caricaturist and author the DNB notes that he "later known as Mustard George grew up in a Derbyshire town living with his father and to judge by the evidence of his later writings received a sound education. He took early to caricature ridiculing his neighbours in Derbyshire; a folio of these drawings dated 1781 is in the Derby Local Studies Library among a sizable collection of his prints drawings and book illustrations. His caricatures having caused something of a local stir he persuaded his father to let him seek his fortune in London. "Apart from two caricature prints dated 1785 designed by Woodward and published by him from 28 Cary Street Lincoln's Inn London it was not until 1790 that he made an impact on the London scene. Thereafter his output was copious. The British Museum catalogues list 525 examples of his work from the next twenty years published by Holland Fores Ackermann and latterly Tegg all leading printsellers. These prints designed by Woodward are etched by others-Rowlandson who was his friend and drinking companion Isaac Cruikshank Roberts and Williams. Woodward's original drawings are vigorous. and his value lay in his humorous ideas. "Woodward.might have rivalled Hogarth. Certainly his collaboration with Rowlandson constituted a lively if frivolous commentary on the social scene. Dorothy George described him as 'original prolific varied humorous and good-humoured' and few students of the subject would dispute her conclusion that his death was 'a loss to caricature' George English Political Caricature 1.174" Simon Heneage 'Woodward George Murgatroyd 1760-1809 Oxford Dictionary of National Biography Oxford University Press 2004. How I used to charm my congregation - slim as a Bedles wand - & delicate as a new wash'd surplice - but since I have been raised to higher dignities I do nothing but remain in my chair; bulky & unweildy as a Folio Church Service. - oh how elegantly I used to manage my discourses - fifteen minutes to a point by the clock under the gallery - never exceeded - short praye - text - and devision - one - two - three & away - that was my method." 1713ref. 215454Amsterdam: Mortier Pieter 1713. unbound. very good. Map. Engraving with original hand outline. Image measures 14.5" x 18.75". Rare map of Paphlagonia an ancient region of northern Anatolia present-day Turkey along the southern coast of the Black Sea. Highlighting the capital city of Sinope this map depicts the region as defined by Strabo: bound by the Parthenius River in the west extending to the Hays river in the east. Sanson depicts the region comprising the Kingdom of Pontus during the rule of Mithridates IV. Neighboring historical regions of Gallatia and Bithynia et Pontus are labeled. Full original margins light scattered foxing. Based on earlier plates by Sanson. This map appeared in "Atlas Antiquus Sacer Ecclesiasticus et Profanus" published in Amsterdam by Pieter Mortier. Nicolas Sanson 1600-1667 who is considered the founder of the French school of cartography. In reaction to the prevailing trend of Dutch lavishness Sanson favored minimal details focusing rather on accurate cartography than ornament. Pierre Mortier 1661-1711 was a Dutch cartographer engraver and printseller who worked in Amsterdam. He used advanced Dutch printing methods to produce high quality editions of contemporary French maps by cartographers such as De L'Isle Sanson Jaillot de Fer and De Wit. His greatest feat was the nautical atlas "Le Neptune Francois" or "Suite de Neptune Francois" considered to contain the most beautiful examples of cartographic art. After his death his widow Amelia continued publishing in partnership with her brother-in-law David until her death in 1719. This map was published during Amelia's tenure at the firm.
