1890rif. 16051PA ca 1890. Very good; some chipping to margins. Four color lithograph 18.75 x 12 inches on a sheet that measures 42 x 14 inches. A graphic illustration of a Union officer with sword on a charging horse. The illustration was cheaply executed and may have been done by a provincial lithographic printer in Pennsylvania for sale to print shops around the state. The large margins provided on the sheet were available for overprinting by local printers who could offer the appealing and eye-catching illustrated 'blank' to local stores. The size appears to be suited for use as a 'pillar' advertisement. unknown books

1775rif. 32202558vo. pp. 19 1 blank; with engraved headpiece vignette and initial; stitched as issued uncut. First edition of this rare moralistic essay on the subject of humour both good and bad. The author states that he has no intention of being stuffy or professorial in his analysis of humour and its subspecies 'mauvaise humeur'. He notes that in the age of 'good company the need to be fashionable had almost entirely ruled out any place for humour and offers the reader a more optimistic view of existence more frivolous and worldly in which humour might have a role'.
