1907rif. 9072New York: Ullman Manufacturing Company 1907. First Edition. Original Wraps. Very Good. First Edition. Original Wraps. An example of early 20th century Black Americana ephemera or as some refer to as 'Negrobilia' referring to a wide array of materials including mass advertisements postcards tourist souvenirs etc. with the image of an African American universally portrayed in a derogatory and racist manner. These items were produced and manufactured by and for white audiences that enhanced the perception of white racial superiority and class status. These type of items are particularly challenging to many communities however many scholars and private collectors alike agree these materials are historical records and reminders of the racist history of the United States and should not be invisible. The puzzle postcard is an example of mass produced racial stereotyping manufactured for an actual mailing enclosure. The instructions on the outside of the mailer state: "Arrange the flaps by placing one over another in such a manner as to show ONLY the eleven pickaninnies." Reference: Goings Kenneth. "Mammy and Uncle Mose: Black Collectibles and American Stereotyping." Bloomington Indiana University Press 1994. Full color off-set printed multi-flap post card mailer with die-cut holes for puzzle and tab for closing. 3.5x5.5"; bright and unmarred with fully intact flaps. Ullman Manufacturing Company unknown

rif. 2916A lovely album containing 74 large original photographs from five trips. These are Berlin 1895 French Alps and Nancy in 1896 Trier in 1897 Interlaken and the Swiss Alps in 1898 and the Tirol in 1899. The photographs were purchased from prominent commercial photographers of the time. The French photographs are largely from ND Phot the Swiss from Schroeder & Cie of Zurich and Edition Photoglob. The majority of the prints are either albumen or early silver gelatin prints. As the early silver gelatin were so similar to albumen it is difficult to tell. There are a number of colourised prints. Most of the prints are quite large with quite a few as large as 210 mm x 275 mm. Most are printed one to a page but a couple of the smaller prints are printed two to a page. One of the images is a double / folding photograph. Album size 27cm x 36cm Un bel album contenant 74 grandes photographies originales de cinq voyages.
