ref. 22057Italy Sixteenth century. Good with some modest surface abrasion and minor loss to a part of the applied stitched strapwork decoration; some light fading of original color in the thread of the portrait. Embroidered panel measuring appx. 454 x 570 mm. Apparels such as this were produced throughout Italy. The work would have been undertaken by a number of people to do the background portrait and decorative elements. A variety of thread was used. The piece is quite heavy indicating the use of metallic wire wrapped around silk thread. The border frame outermost perimeter is entirely metal wire thread. Color dyed silk thread is used in the portrait in order to effect "depth" and realism and to accomplish the figure's modelling. It is assumed that the subject is St. Anthony of Egypt given the cross that accompanies the figure. The strapwork foliate ornamentation is first seen in Islamic manuscripts and artwork; taken up in Italy where it was used in an array of decorative arts eventually to spread throughout Europe. unknown books

A scarcely recorded account of the Siege of Plymouth by the Royalists in the Civil War locally published in the bicentennial year of the bloodiest episode in the city's history. Although the source documents on which the narrative is based are not explicitly stated it seems likely that the diary of John Syms Puritan naval chaplain and librarian was one of them. Having refused to surrender to the Royalists the citizenry of Plymouth signed a solemn covenant to fight to the last man; although poorly armed the defenders managed to overcome a formidable attacking force commanded by Sir Richard Grenville. The town held out for the next four years until the Parliamentary army finally prevailed over the Royalists. With the death of Cromwell in 1658 and the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 however retribution was exacted by King Charles II against the leaders of the Plymouth resistance many of whom were imprisoned. Some of these peoples are depicted in the thirteen colourful yet fanciful illustrations that accompany the text. The four regions alluded to in the title are Europe Asia Africa and America; however Oceania is represented in the section Amerique through the inclusion of a three-page description accompanied by a plate of the Friendly Isles Tonga. Among the other engraved plates are depictions of the indigenous inhabitants of Florida Tierra del Fuego China Ceylon Senegal Persia Turkey Russia and Spain. The geography is followed by short primers in French grammar arithmetic penmanship and drawing. No copy traced in Australian libraries. hardcover
ref. 50719London : H. Such Printer & Publisher 177 Union Street Boro' S. E. after 1863. Broadside sheet size 255 x 185 mm printed in two columns with title of the first ballad in bold at the head of the left-hand column and with a woodcut illustration and title of the second ballad at the head of the right-hand column; publisher's serial number '499' in bold at lower right; printed on cheap and brittle paper which has browned edges with chipping and a few old tape repairs to verso partial loss of the opening capital letter of Young Henry otherwise the texts of both ballads are complete. An extremely late transportation broadside with versions of two convict ballads that are both known from much earlier printings. The State Library of New South Wales appears to hold the only copy of this particular broadside in Australian collections. The narrator of Young Henry the poacher sings that he was brought up near Southam in Warwickshire. After being caught poaching game one night in Squire Dunhill's Park he is convicted at the Warwick Assizes and sentenced to 14 years' penal servitude in Van Diemen's Land. He is brought out on the transport Speedwell then with some poetic licence! ""marched to Sydney"" where he is sold to a gentleman as a book-keeper. Having found happiness in his work he then falls in love with a convict servant from Wolverhampton named Rosanna and in the final stanza he proclaims that he and his sweetheart are now ""rattling off our chains in foreign lands to roam"". The ballad Botany Bay is also told in the first person. Its narrator sends a stark warning to other young men to heed his advice and ""quit night walking and shun bad company"" else they suffer the same fate and are transported to New South Wales. However it is important to note that the London printer and publisher Henry P. Such did not commence business at 177 Union Street until 1863 meaning that this broadside was printed at least two decades after January 1842 when the last ships bringing convicts arrived in New South Wales; and at least a decade after the last convict transport arrived in Van Diemen's Land in May 1853. While it is true that convict transportation to Western Australia persisted up until 1868 neither of the ballads in this broadside makes mention of that destination. Interestingly the present broadside is listed as number 499 out of 930 songs in the Henry P. Such catalogue of songs published around 1890. On the title-page of his catalogue which has been digitised - see below Such states that these songs are 'constantly kept in stock'. If they were also constantly being added to this might suggest an original publication date as late as 1875 for number 499 Young Henry the Poacher / Botany Bay - roughly the mid-point between 1863 and 1890: 'Henry Parker Such was one of the last London publishers of broadside ballads. In a letter to the folk song collector Francis James Child dated 23 August 1890 Harvard University MS Eng 863 Appendix no. 5 Sabine Baring-Gould writes: The only three printers of Broadside ballads now in London are Fortey S. Andrew’s St Seven Dials. He has no catalogue & no collection of his old ballads. Still – you can have something from him. Then there is Such 177 Union St Borough who has a catalogue. It is now out of print but he is reprinting. A third is Taylor 92 Brick Lane Spitalfields. I have not been to him to see if he has a catalogue.' Ian Maxted Exeter Working Papers in Book History https://bookhistory.blogspot.com/2013/01/baring-gould-and-such-song-catalogue.html This all leads us to conclude that the present broadside was already being regarded as a historical and musicological curiosity when it was printed and sold - whether that was in 1863 or as late as 1875 - as by this time the two ballads had already become part of the burgeoning phenomenon that was the craze for English folk-song collecting; and needless to say neither ballad by this time carried the same urgency or potency as it would have done in the 1820s or 1830s. unknown

Together they address three of the central controversies of the Reformation settlement: Protestant rejection of the authority and constitution of the Council of Trent proposals for the reform and proper ordering of the Church and Georg Cassanders conciliatory argument for restoring Communion to the laity under both bread and wine. The volume has particularly attractive bibliophile provenance. It bears the engraved maritime ex-libris and ownership stamp of the eighteenth-century collector Captain J.-G. Michiels followed by the manuscript ownership inscription J. F. Vandevelde identifiable with the theologian librarian and major Belgian bibliophile Jean-François / Jan Frans Van de Velde 17431823. Both collectors are independently recorded among earlier owners represented in the celebrated library of the Rev. Joseph Mendham whose collection was particularly rich in Reformation Roman Catholic and Council of Trent material and subsequently passed to the Law Society. The present volume bears the Law Society armorial bookplate; an origin in the Mendham Collection is therefore highly probable although its precise Mendham catalogue entry has not yet been identified.Bound in eighteenth-century calf with gilt border to the boards marbled endpapers and red edges. The binding is now defective with both boards detached and substantial loss of the spine leather but the text block remains sound and the three constituent works are internally notably well preserved. An appealing association volume whose succession of ownership mirrors the long antiquarian interest in the religious controversies represented by its contents.PROVENANCECaptain J.-G. ref. 124293Manchester 10 October 1810. . Hebrew manuscript on vellum 19.1 x 16.6 cm text in square Ashkenazi script in black ink and signatures in Cursive Hebrew in old brown ink; some staining most likely wine as expected. Snapshot of Manchester's tiny Jewish community at the turn of the 19th century. Scarce early Ketubbah Jewish marriage contract recording the marriage of Sinai son of Todrus Hacohen and Lea daughter of Shimon on Wednsday 12th of Tishrei 5571. Witnessed by: Alexander son of Jacob Segal of Prague and Laufer Yehudayev of the house of Ezra Halevi from Tiktin great Polish rabbinical centre at the time. In 1810 the entire Jewish population of Manchester consisted of only about 15 families. There wasn't a synagogue in the city at the time. The men worked together prayed together in the rented attic on Garden Street and acted as witnesses for one another's milestones. The presence of Ashkenazi witnesses from Prague and Poland shows that the Hacohen family belonged to the Ashkenazi founding core of Manchester's Jewish community. The first witness Alexander son of Jacob Segal a.k.a. Alexander Jacobs was one of the most prominent and well-documented figures in the earliest history of Manchester Jewry. He arrived in Manchester from Prague via London and began his career as a watch-glass maker. He became a successful silversmith and in 1826 confounded the Manchester Hebrew Philanthropic Society to support poor Jewish immigrants. Both witnesses at this wedding are Levits as Segal means 'Sgan Levi' - Assistant Levite which is a testament to the fact that Todrus and Sinai Hacohen belonged to the foundational Ashkenazi core of the Jewish community of Manchester.
