1935ref. 21174ca1935. As found. Very good with one abraded chipped circular gap on the necklace of the primary figure in the painted image that measures appx. 3/16 of an inch in diameter. The gap is on the verso of the screen. The screen mesh is in good condition i.e. not punctured. Color lithography on wire screen. The colored surface measures appx. 31 x 24.5 inches. It is stapled on to the plain painted framing boards. A most unusual representation of New Deal ideals within the genre of Baltimore screen painting. This manner of folk-art is singular to Baltimore and started some time around WWI. The "painting" offered here is actually some form of lithography we have seen an identical image as part of a set with the same framing and deviates dramatically from the typical subjects - country scenes or lifeless landscapes - of the genre. The artist is unknown but one assumes must have been a beneficiary of a WPA project somewhere at some time based on the prominent presence of the American "Federal" eagle on the lower right of the painting. This is one of a series of four whose subjects were "Truth" "Justice" "Liberty" and "Equality" that made up the set. They were most likely meant as wall decoration for a public building court house. It is remarkable that the medium of wire mesh screening was used to produce the image - perhaps a Baltimore artist reverting to his/her roots in the WPA program. The result is a graphic "icon" made inexpensively yet more lasting than a depiction on paper and employing more hands in its production. unknown books

ref. 3728502New York 1837. Small octavo. 1 engraved title 2 91 1 1 10pp. Album with manuscript additions and two hand-drawn star charts and 13 pen and ink outline portraits. Quarter green cloth with original pale yellow silk-patterned paper covered boards; dark blue endpapers; all edges gilt. Album with engraved title leaf with vignette illustration. Album re-backed with green cloth; new cloth reinforced hinges; rubbing to edges of boards; scattered foxing; very good. Unusual handwritten American astrological album dated 1837 containing detailed horoscope readings hand-drawn star charts predictive portrait drawings dream interpretations and lottery number advice. The manuscript records two full horoscope readings: an extensive analysis of Robert H. Gould not yet twenty-one and a separate “Lady’s Horoscope” for a woman apparently born in 1810. Each section is accompanied by a hand-drawn astrological chart mapping the celestial signs governing the subject’s birth with the individuals consistently described as “natives.” Gould’s horoscope is notably elaborate forecasting marriage career prospects travel to the southern United States and Mexico “In 7 years you will be in the South you will be Rich in Mexico and in the Southern States” longevity and specific advice on favorable days of action. It also provides recommended lottery numbers and predictions concerning children prosperity and personal relationships. The album includes pen-and-ink portraits depicting Gould at age twenty-one figures said to influence his future and a child identified as one of his sons. The lady’s horoscope offers comparable predictions including marriage faithfulness personal fortune bodily injury and death and is illustrated with drawings of her future husband or sincere friend. Written with confident authority the compiler explicitly distinguishes his interpretations from contemporary printed dream books suggesting familiarity with popular astrological and oneiric literature of the period. An exceptionally rare survival documenting antebellum astrology and popular belief in the United States. Note. 1. Album New York: Published by Solomon King 1830 unrecorded in OCLC. zxc unknown

1687ref. 673L6London: Not Stated 1687. First edition. Paperback. Very Good Indeed. 8" by 6". None. The first edition of this very scarce satire on John Dryden written contemporaneously to his success. Scarce - last seen at auction in 1981. Pages 12 20 are misnumbered as called for. ESTC no: R36782 WING: R1206 Collated complete with the final blank. With the signatures A4 B2 C-E4. This work is a satire on John Dryden with extracts from his poems. The title references his allegorical poem 'The Hind and the Panther' which is regarded as one of his most controversial. Dryden had converted to Catholicism around the same time as the Catholic monarch James II's accession to the throne in 1685. Many Protestant writers were disgusted by this particularly as previous poems by Dryden included praise towards Puritan Protectorate Oliver Cromwell. Dryden's 'The Hind and the Panther' came from Dryden's conversion and he describes the different religious denominations as animals making clear his new stance as a Catholic. This 'Trage-Comedy' is a response to Dryden's 'The Hind and the Panther' and his revolt against his previous beliefs. The introduction provides a synopsis of Dryden's poem and states that for writing it Dryden deserves to be 'reckon'd in the number of the Heathen Gods'. A very scarce work which provides context to the political and social climate of the seventeenth century. Disbound as called for. Externally smart with just a few light spots to the front and rear wraps. Internally firmly bound. To A2 there is a small ring mark at the bottom of the page not affecting the text. 1675ref. 66A VERY INTRIGUING LITTLE BOOK OF THE UTMOST RARITY FIRST and ONLY edition. 12mo 96 pp. title within a charming woodcut border. Several headpieces. Contemporary calf with gilt decorations to spine skilfully restored. An excellent copy. This anonymous collection of heroical amorous and frivolous poems is a mystery. It has no imprint information so no place no name nor date stated. The title-page tells us just "printed in that year" which seems a joke. The only bibliographical work mentioning it is Lachèvre's Bibliographie des recueils collectifs de poésies publiés de 1597 a 1700 Paris 1905 in the Supplement Vol. 4 p. 22 Letter N. Not even Lachèvre managed to see this work in person as he stated in his comment to the work: "Nous n'avons pas été assez heureux pour mettre la main sur ce petit volume.". Lachèvre suggested that the book might have been published "vers 1675". The book is mentioned also in the third part of Bibliotheca Hohendorfiana no. 1961 p. 149 the catalogue of the private library of Baron Georg Wilhelm von Hohendorf La Haye 1720. Only two copies seem to be available in public libraries around the world: at the BNF of Paris "Ex. libr. de Thomas Westwod. Rel. mar. r. de C. Hardy" and at the Austrian National Library which perhaps holds the above mentioned Hohendorf copy.
