Best.-Nr. 372430Np. c. late 1850s. Ninth-plate Tintype. 2½ x 2 inches. Book-form burgundy morocco case with gilt and blind decoration and silk lining; with wallet-style binding with brass closure. Tintype with brass mat and hand-tinting. Near fine. Diminutive tintype portrait of a man with delicately hand-tinted cheeks and lips mounted in a leather book-form case. The case housing the tintype is decorated using many of the same techniques used to create a luxury bookbinding: blind ruling frames on the exterior “boards” gilt rolled designs on the “turn-ins” and edges and a silk “endpaper” which in this case folds over to protect the glass covered tintype. The tintype is an early example of the process; these were typically not case-mounted after the 1850s. unknown

Best.-Nr. 146304Np. Norwich England 1760s. Broadside. 12½ x 8½ inches. Laid paper; printed in two columns. Superscription “Third Part” in manuscript written above title. Old fold lines; staining; some losses to paper at edges not affecting text; good. Unrecorded eighteenth century polemical broadside in the tradition satirist Ned Ward or the mock poem Hudibras. While the present broadside includes only a few lines of poetry like Hudibras it appears to describe a religious controversy between a “Methodist Grub-Street Printer” named Don Dismallo Thickscullo de Halfwitto and another printer Dicko-Don-Quacko.The broadside reports that the printers’ dispute was also carried out in dueling newspapers the eighteenth century equivalent of an internet “flame war.” That the dispute was ongoing seems to be implied in the manuscript addition written at the top of the broadside: “Third Part.” The broadside states: "The Methodists and their Printer having erected their Battery of Lampoonary against the Printer of the Paper call’d Helter Skelter He hereby declares a Paper War against all Dicko Don Quack’s Mendicant Crew…" A mention of a work printed by the “Methodist Grub-Street Printer” concerning Pondicherry may well help to date the broadside to after 1761 when British forces in India defeated the French at Pondicherry. An account of a legal dispute between two printers found in a 1768 English literary annual The British Palladium may well shed light on the controversy outlined in the present broadside and suggests a possible place of publication Norwich England. The account begins: "An eminent Printer in the City of Norwich was once personally aspersed by a single Quack distributing Hand-bills against him in that city who as a Remedy for his Disorder brought out a Pamphlet cried about the Streets intitled The History of Dicko Don Quacko Liliano Brazenfaciano who instead of considering it as a wholesome Remedy for his Evil took Offence at his Prescriber insisting on his being misnamed and misrepresented. In consequence whereof a Trial was appointed to come on before a certain Judge…" The tradition of such fantastically named characters hearkens back to Samuel Butler’s Hudibras 1663 1664 and 1678 and to Four Hudibrastick Canto’s Being Poems on Four the greatest Heroes That liv’d in any Age since Nero’s Don Juan Howlet Hudibras Dicko-ba-nes and Bonniface 1715 sometimes attributed to Ned Ward. Unrecorded eighteenth century satirical broadside concerning the press and the growing influence of print culture in England. Not in ESTC. Ref. The British Palladium; or Annual Miscellany: for the Bissextile Year 1768. London 1768. unknown
Best.-Nr. 3724701Np. c. 1850s–1860s. Watercolor 8¾ × 7¼ inches on oval board. In modern frame glazed. Small stain at upper right not affecting the portrait; light wear and staining to the mount; overall very good. Mid-19th-century watercolor portrait of a woman seated at a writing table holding a letter likely executed after a studio photograph based on the plain backdrop and formal pose. The sitter wears a dark crinoline dress with lace collar and cuffs her hair styled in ringlets typical of the 1850s–early 1860s. The face and hands are carefully modeled with broader more economical handling in the skirt and background. The writing implements and letter point to literacy and domestic correspondence. unknown
Best.-Nr. 145237Bas-Rhin Alsace France 1818. Broadside approx. 10½ × 8¼ inches. Ink manuscript on laid paper with red ink and pencil illustrations; watermark visible. Folded with creases light soiling irregular trimming and minor edge wear not affecting text or decoration; very good. Offered with: One-page German manuscript on matching laid paper with identical watermark also dated 1818. Folded with creases and a small perforation not affecting text; very good. Curious and crudely executed folk art this 1818 German-language taufschein baptismal certificate is decorated in ink and pencil. The text records the birth in “Diemringen” and baptism in “Rathsweiler” likely Ratzwiller a village near Diemringen in Bas-Rhin Alsace. Fitting the baptismal theme it features a chicken and egg motif symbolizing creation and new life. The opening lines in German transcription approximate read: “I’ve been baptized and registered The Book of Life includes me now My Father will love me eternally / And be merciful to His child / God surely knows me already for a long time / My name rests in His hand.” Alternating lines circles and triangles frame the text in an abstract border with the chicken and egg motif placed prominently at the top. Square blocks of color in each corner may suggest a picture frame or reference the brass bosses found on elaborately bound 18th- and 19th-century Bibles. Accompanying the taufschein is a one-page untranslated German manuscript written on matching laid paper with an identical watermark also dated 1818. Both items appear to have originated in Bas-Rhin and were acquired together from an estate in Lancaster County Pennsylvania—an area of early German-speaking settlement. The family may have emigrated from Alsace after the post-Napoleonic upheaval of 1815 when widespread political and economic instability spurred migration. The watermark on both sheets is of the “Vryheyt” “Freedom” type used in Holland and later copied in England Sweden and the United States; see Churchill’s Watermarks in Paper nos. 79–108. The full watermark—visible on the illustrated sheet—depicts a lion holding a stave within a crowned circle possibly encircled by the motto “Pro Patria Eiusque Libertate.” unknown

The Visio Tnugdali "Vision of Tnugdalus" is a 12th-century religious text reporting the otherworldly vision of the Irish knight Tnugdalus later also called "Tundalus" "Tondolus" or in English translations "Tundale." The work remained most popular in Germany with ten different translations into German including this one which is in a high renaissance German. This facsimile is in good condition. 1836Best.-Nr. 28253G. A. Williams J. Lee etc Cheltenham 1836. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/not applicable. A rare pamphlet that puts the case for a line as per the title above which the promoters thought would be an improvement on or possibly complement the Great Western route via Didcot. As history has proved the scheme did not materialise. The notion of an east-west route outlined here as Norwich to Gloucester via Cambridge and Tring would certainly appeal even today. However the mention of the term 'inclined plane' in the projected route may partly explain why the venture was a non-starter. Ottley 6019 another pamphlet of 1836 and titled 'A Voice from Cheltenham.' and signed 'A Shareholder in the Tring Co.' suggests further complications - 'We have been grossly misled and deluded'. Very good copy paper slightly cockled minor browning of the first and last leaves. Recent good quality binding of quarter calf gilt lettered on the spine with marbled paper boards.
