1778ref. 791L1London: J Dodsley 1778. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 7" by 4.5". None. A smart first edition copy of this very scarce satire on Dr Robert Bragge. ESTC reference no: T64087. This work is a satire on Dr Robert Bragge who is given the titular character's name 'Dr Robert Bonhout'. Dr Bragge was an important figure in the art market during the eighteenth century and has been regarded as one of the first examples in England of the gentleman-connoisseur-dealer. He became a popular figure in society and held numerous auctions throughout the mid 1700s. This publication was issued the year after his death and focuses on Bragge's gluttony and his wife's parsimony. Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece.Collated complete. In a contemporary full calf binding. Externally generally smart. Light rubbing to the joints and extremities. A few light spots to boards. Light offsetting to the title page. Internally firmly bound. 1678ref. 655L24London: J H and T S 1678. Disbound. Near Fine. 7.5" by 6". None. A scarce seventeenth century pamphlet regarding penal laws dispensed by James II in 1687. This work provides one individual's opinion of these laws through the form of a letter. The first and only edition of this work. The Penal Laws or the 'Declaration of Indulgence' or 'Declaration for Liberty of Conscience' were a pair of proclamations. It was the first step to establish freedom of religion in the British Isles with the King's intention being to promote Catholicism. The declaration was to grant toleration to many Christian denominations. Many Anglicans opposed this Declaration on constitutional grounds. ESTC No. R1415 With the final leaf blank as called for. To the front of this pamphlet a prior owner has written 'John Jubbes' next to the 'Author'. It is unlikely that Jubbes wrote this pamphlet as he was deceased many years earlier. The title page attributes the author as 'Author of the Harmony of Divinity and Law'. The author of this work is George Hickes. Hickes was an English divine and scholar. ESTC does not corroborate this as they do not attribute this work to anyone. The author upon writing to his friend discusses whether the King had the write to create such penal laws. This work delves into scripture doctrines and law to establish a conclusion. This pamphlet was published as the country was in a turbulent state regarding its rule. This demonstrates some of the feeling in the country on the run-up to the Glorious Revolution of 1688-1689 which saw James II dethroned by his daughter Mary and her Dutch Husband William of Orange. A fascinating piece of contemporary history from the seventeenth century. Disbound as is usual. Externally in an excellent condition with just a few light spots. The pamphlet remains bright with just the odd spots. Small loss to the bottom outer margin of B. Near Fine J H and T S unknown
