1777ref. 127Dublin: James Williams 1777. First Edition. full 18th cent. calf; rebacked. A very good copy; some occ. dustiness. 12mo. Engraved title page. 6 12 - 244 pp. An unusual descriptive low life ramble set out in a series of numbered descriptions and vignettes of life characters appear in some of the vignettes. There is hardly a topic the author does not consider and ridicule. At times this appears a jest book. There is no London edition as the Dublin imprint may lead one to suspect and the ESTC and NUC cite only this printing. The book is well done and quite funny in parts. Greenough p. 224. 181012mo., with an engraved frontispiece by Armstrong and engraved title-vignette by Mitan (both after Cooke), frontispiece and title mildly foxed, neat contemporary initials and date on title, title wanting top outer corner, some light marginal age-staining to text; most attractively bound in early nineteenth-century full calf, sides with double gilt frame border enclosing a well-proportioned Greek key border all in gilt, neatly rebacked in calf gilt to style, gilt doublures, marbled endpapers, marbled edges, a very good, crisp copy of a scarce issue. With the large mid-nineteenth century bookplate of Reginald Dolley on paste-downs. The letters of 'Junius' were written to the 'London Public Advertiser' between 1769 and 1772 as part of a concerted and venomous attack on the government of the Duke of Grafton in favour of the return of the Earl of Chatham. Following numerous pirated and incomplete editions, the first authorised version appeared in 1772 and was an immediate success. The letters were regarded as models of neo-classical style (they were praised by both Burke and Johnson) and have been many times reprinted. Their authorship remains a major literary enigma of eighteenth century English literature. Harvey (OCEL) and CBEL favour Sir Philip Francis (the case would appear a strong one) but there are at least forty other nominees including figures as diverse as Burke, Gibbon, Temple, Tooke and Walpole. A SCARCE ISSUE IN WELL-PRESERVED PERIOD BINDING

1670ref. 601L7London: E Okes for William Whitwood 1670. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8" by 6". None. The first edition of this scarce tract on Ralph Wallis a nonconformist pamphleteer known as 'the Cobler of Gloucester'. This tract appeared following the death of Wallis and focuses on Wallis' ideas and his pamphleteering. Wallis' biographer states to this work that 'His complexion was of a sunburnt gipsy colour and his skin was rough and tawny like singed bacon; his hair was brown and bristly upon his head but his locks were weather-turned like a barber's show periwig'. Despite his Nonconformist views Wallis was raised by Roman Catholic parents. His parents were 'church papists' meaning they conformed to the demands of the Church of England enough to escape persecution. It is believed that Wallis began writing his pamphlets against the government in the 1650's but these early works have not survived. Wallis was apprehended by the government following his dispersion of pamphlets and he was held in custody. He admitted authorship of the works but declared to be in religion 'a Christian' and so was released. His pamphlets were frequently of a scatological tone and featured entertaining anecdotes regarding clergymen whose names and addresses he knew. DNB This work is the ESTC no. R20134. Collated complete. Rebound in full cloth. This biography provides further insight into the political and religious turbulence of the seventeenth century. Rebound in a full cloth binding. Externally excellent with little to no shelfwear. Internally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges. Scattered spotting to the first and last few pages with just the odd spots to margins. Very Good E Okes for William Whitwood hardcover
