rif. 3734846N.p. n.d. ca. 1880s–1890s. 10¼ x 7¼ inches. Printed via a photomechanical process. A very good example. This broadside poem voices the imagined last words of a dying Union soldier held at Camp Sumter more widely known as Andersonville. The text is set in display type with decorative borders and features a central image of a flag-bearing Zouave soldier rendered in a style simulating a wood engraving. The anonymous verse describes thirst starvation and emotional torment portraying the prison as a “cruel rebel den.” It emphasizes separation from home appeals for letters and rescue and ends with a vision of death as release. The soldier dreams of water“green fields in which to roam” and peace beyond the “Dead Line”—a reference to the real boundary in Andersonville beyond which prisoners were shot. Poems like this circulated widely in the decades following the war reinforcing narratives of Confederate cruelty and the martyrdom of Union soldiers. Likely produced in the 1880s or 1890s using a photo-mechanical process this piece reflects the ongoing work of remembrance in the North through inexpensive printed ephemera. Curiously the broadside is printed on a single sheet of paper with a soft matte vermilion-pink wash applied only to the verso. Unrecorded in OCLC. unknown

1820rif. 4569Paris: Chez Martinet 1820. A lovely copy of this scarce cartoon. Unsigned but the initials LL. are printed to the lower right of the plate. We are unable to find a caricaturist with those initials Leander always signed his work. A gentleman is bowing to a couple approaching him. The lady tips her parasol. All are dressed as dandies. Attractive hand colouring. To the bottom left of the pate it is written in ink "Chez Martinet". A clean print with just a little marking / darkening to the sheet. Tipped onto a slightly larger piece of stiff card. A very nice item. Plate is 32cm x 24cm. The backing card is 35.5cm x 30cm. First edition. .

1852rif. LTH3-F-24London: Houlston and Stoneman 1852-3. Leather. Good. 6.5" by 4". None. Two interesting novels bound as one. The first Uncle Tom in England appears to be an english novel which draws a parallel to Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. The author is not attributed although to the rear there is an essay by anti-slavery campaigner and president of the British and Foreign anti-slavery society Thomas Clarkson. To the preface is written that the author has connected its plot to the work of Mrs Stowe and is therefore to be looked on as an Echo or sequel to 'Uncle Tom'. Several characters share their names with Stowe's. This is the third edition of Uncle Tom in England printed the same year as the first American edition. Uncle tom in England is an extremely scarce and unusual text. The second novel to this text is Benjamin Disraeli's novel Venetia. Venetia was originally released in 1837 and was published so as to form an income for Disraeli in a time of need. It is a romance based on the characters of Shelley and Byron. In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally generally smart with heavy rubbing to spine and boards. Spine label and head and tail of spine are particularly rubbed. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Prior owner's inscription to front pastedown 'John P Maitland Family Heriloom'. Another inscription to recto of front endpaper dated 1918. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with scattered spots throughout. Good Houlston and Stoneman hardcover

rif. 467558Eveleigh Nash & Grayson. Hardcover. Good. A book of Edwardian/King George V era gossip.written in 1924. A sort of early 'Private Eye'. Although the author is anonymous Anon it may have been the work of Julian Osgood Field the son of Maunsell Bradhurst Field 1822–75 who was an official of the US Treasury under Abraham Lincoln and Julia Field née Stanton. Educated in England he lived largely in London and Paris and became an intimate of the future King Edward VII of Great Britain. Field used the pseudonym "X.L." or "Sigma" to write decadent horror fiction. His anonymously authored books of recollections have been mined by biographers and historians.
