1890rif. 20049ca1890. Commercial albums. Very good; one album is essentially disbound. Some interior photographs are improperly fixed. Oblong 8vo appx. 7 x 10.5 inches containing 71 mounted albumen prints. The photographs vary in size but most are 4.5 x 6.75 inches. The photographs are not captioned or identified. A handsome set of photographic albums recording the interior of a well appointed New York City townhouse and two rare photographs from Central Park of the then recently completed Temple Beth-El 5th Ave. & 76 St. dedicated Sept. 18 1891 and demolished in 1947 - one of the treasures of American synagogue architecture accomplished in the Romanesque style by A Brunner. There are additional street photographs and an unidentified country summer residence along with an Afro-American groundsman. A possible clue to the origin of the albums are the inclusion of photographs of the monument to A L Holley engineer located in Washington Sq. See Wischnitzer Synagogue Architecture in the USA pp. 87-89. unknown books

1880rif. 12526Philadelphia: Grant Faires & Rodgers ; Indian Rights Association. Good. Ephemera. Possibly once bound in wrappers which are missing. Spine chewed but stitches holding together well. Preserved by former owner in mylar wrap.; 16 pp. ; saddle stitch; hand-stamp of Indian Conference Card Catalog 1913 on title page. The title can be taken as sarcastic as the pamphlet apparently issued with the support of a half-dozen or more religious organizations excoriates the U. S. Government's barborous betrayal of many if not most of the 900 treaties during the prior 100 years and calls upon Christian authority and principles to "set crooked things straight." NEWS NOTES 6 copy pages typed single staple. First page on yellow stock; in Indian Rights Assoc. Cover.; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 16; 6 pages . 1880; 1954. 1980rif.
1875rif. 5523Paris: N.D. Photo / X. Photo. C1875. Two attractive albumen photographs of Paris pasted onto two sides of the same piece of stiff card. Both are 21cm x 28cm. One is a view of the Champ Elysées taken from on top of the Arc de Triomphe. A good clean and bright image showing quite a crowd of carriages on the road with pedestrians on the wide pavements to the side. The view fades into the distance. Clean and good photograph. The second side shows the front of the National Opera with carriages omnibuses and pedestrians milling around. What is particularly interesting in this shot is that the lamp posts are being installed in Front of the Opera. These enable us to date the photograph as they were originally installed in 1875. These form part of the "Ring of Light" Ceinture de Lumière a set of 60 lighting fixtures designed by architect Charles Garnier as integral to the opera house's exterior when it opened on January 5 1875. A nice photograph if slightly faded. The backing card is 25.5cm x 30.5cm and has a couple of closed tears to the edges. not affecting the prints. The sheet has obviously been removed from an album at some point. . 23049Unknown date and place French/Spanish. Carefully stitched to a cloth covered mounting board. Overall excellent but with some superficial darkening in small areas because of hair oil residue. Twisted metal-wire collar measuring appx. 60 x 47.5 cm. A complex finely woven twisted metal wire lace-work collar of indeterminate age and origin. The lace-work for want of a better descriptive term is minutely detailed and modelled after the examples from 16th century continental textile pattern books. It is decorated with elaborate three dimensional "rosettes" in a field of roundels varying in size and gauge of the wire utilized. Rebatos or collars included in early 17th century or late 16th century portraits of women seem close in style to the one offered here but the twisted wrapped wire construction argues for a later period . It was apparently worn at some time and then removed from the garment and preserved. See F Speelberg Met. Museum of Art Bulletin Fall 2015 Fashion & Virtue. hardcover books
