1750Best.-Nr. 21076France-Paris ca1750. Overall in very good condition with some small spots of surface wear. Oak box meas. appx. 85 x 195 x 140 mm. The box has been covered in dyed straw marquetry. Here the application mimics the 17th century "Hungarian stitch" a type of needlework with a colored flame-shaped pattern. The box is lined in paper daub blotted with a blue color. Hook and eye clasp. Commencing in the late 17th century straw marquetry was manufactured in many large cities throughout Europe. The first mention of such decorative objects and furniture is in Paris in 1652. General commerce in such goods was established by the 1750s when both Chervain and Delasson had workshops in Paris producing decorative objects with straw marquetry. The straw was first dyed then split length-wise and flattened with hammer blows. The marquetry pattern was then laid out and glued to paper that was mounted directly on to the object to be covered. Color dyes were fugitive a result of lack of penetration into the cellulose wall structure of the straw and rapidly faded in direct sunlight. The same process was also used as a book binding decoration. Second edition of the English translation by John Norton. ¶ Duodecimo; A-E12 F11 A1 half title present Bound in original full calf missing some leather from spine but cords are very strong. ESTC Citation No. N1243 415J. Some wonderful quotes for this book: The Answer of R. W. to his Friend importunately desiring to know what LOVE might be I Acknowledge the wanton Ty∣ranny of imperious Love that is always requiring the most diffi∣cult Trials of the Affections. Now though it be a kinde of an Hercu∣lean Labour it self to Love considering those severe duties those toyls and hazards appendant to it; as if Cruelty were its sole delight: Nevertheless we believe it reasonable what names so∣ever we have given to Love that he should exercise his Soveraignty which is certainly very great and puissant; and by the Severity of his Commands that he should augment the glory of his high Rule and our obedient Sub∣mission. "However this is the supreme Office of Reason to make a right choice of Disposition and Conditions; to choose a Companion with whom we are sure to live with more delight than with our selves; whose judgment we may be sure to follow as our own: or else to stay till we can finde a proper Ob∣ject of Love. Then also so to love like one who is guided by Judgment not carried away by Passion; like one so far from ceasing that he is always beginning to Love. This is to joyn Patience with Constancy. This is to receive the Idea more fairly imprinted in the Minde than in Wax and to preserve more stedfastly. 'Tis the Of∣fice of Vertue to determine upon one measure of wishing; to covet a dispo∣sition and inclination like his own through all the changes of Fortune; and so to make two of one that they may act the same person.". The "Amoris Effigies anon. London 1649 1664 1668 1671. In 1680 appeared a loose English translation by a Robert Nightingale which deviated in many points from the Latin original. John Norris under the pseudonym Phil-iconerus published a fresh translation London 1682; 2nd edit. 1701; In his introduction Norris wrote of Waring's "sweetness of fancy neatness of style and lusciousness of hidden sense". Waring also wrote Latin verses including in Jonsonus Virbius playwright Ben Jonson.1639 reprinted in the 1668 and subsequent editions of the Amoris Effigies under the title of Carmen Lapidorium." The blocks have rubbing to the corners with slight loss of image. The lithographs are on thin paper and has small nicks and tears to the edges but still attractive. Darkening to the image on the front board. Overall an attractive game showing signs of regular use. This was clearly British from the red post box on the image to the lid of the box. 1685Best.-Nr. 706L9Paris: Francois Muguet 1685. First edition. Disbound. Very Good Indeed. 10.5" by 8". None. A very scarce legal tract from France dated 1685. This work details the revoking of the sentence of the Galeres or galleys. This edict was presented to the court of aids on the 19 November 1685. In the original French. Being two leaves and therefore four pages. A very scarce work with no copies cited on the Library Hub. This edict deals with the punishment of individuals on the galleys or galeres. There is mention of the ineffectiveness of whips due to the fact that this simply injures criminals. The tract states that medical professionals are then kind to the offenders which brings a rise in recidivism. An interesting insight into the French penal system in the late seventeenth century. Disbound as called for. Externally very smart. Light spots to the front and rear pages. Inscription to the title page dated 1685. Firmly bound. Pages are bright with light scattered spots. Very Good Indeed Francois Muguet unknown
