1940Best.-Nr. 22522no date 1940'S. paperback. Good. landscape 4to. colour and b&w illustrations Unique pattern-design dressmaking drafting book with numerous patterns all executed by hand in pencil and blue and red colour pencils including pencil drawings on transparent paper approximating the finished product and occasional pages with sections cut out of self-adhesive yellow paper; the patterns are highly detailed laid out on grids with dimensions degrees of angle etc and appear to be at least semi-professional; all pattens accompanied by holograph notes in pencil on occasion filling entire pages; the handwriting appears to be Cyrillic but is difficult to determine clearly; I presume Russia without conviction!; a faint pencil inscription to front cover appears to show '1949' which I take to be the date although it may possibly also be part of an address - in any case mid C-20th; produced in a paperback Drawing Book perhaps three-quarters of the pages employed 25.5 x 29 x 2cm with Mickey Mouse holding a candle to front three punch-holes at spine with 2 pieces of cord binding one piece missing; Good throughout with glue affecting some pages covers a little rubbed and creased to corners. paperback

1835Best.-Nr. 26036New York City ca1835. Not bound. Very good. A unique conté crayon ink and watercolor rendering 98 x 140 mm of the prison from Manhattan Island. A dream-like rendering of the prison in an arcadian setting adorned with a flight of birds over the prison in finely delineated ink outline. Alas there is no back story to add. It is however an unsual subject. The perspective if correct is across the East River from Kips Bay. Please note that the color temperatures are to the blue in the scan offered here. New York City purchased the East River island in 1828. In 1832 a penitentiary was built on the island. This physically isolated prisoners from the city and from the mainland. However prisoners were not the only inmates on Blackwells Island. Nineteenth century Blackwells Island was also home to a complex of workhouses a general hospital an almshouse a hospital for incurables the insane and for a time a smallpox hospital. The watercolor offered here appears to duplicate a "view" issued by the Peabody Co. in their Views in New York . 1830-1834. books
