The tale is about a badger called Tommy Brock and his arch enemy Mr. Tod a fox. Brock kidnaps the children of Benjamin Bunny and his wife Flopsy intending to eat them and hides them in an oven in the home of Mr. Tod. Benjamin and his cousin Peter Rabbit have followed Tommy Brock in an attempt to rescue the babies. When Mr. Tod finds Brock asleep in his bed he determines to get him out of the house. His initial attempt fails and the two eventually come to blows. Under cover of the fight the rabbits rescue the baby rabbits. The tale was influenced by the Uncle Remus stories and was set in the fields of Potter's Castle Farm. The tale is critically considered one of Potter's "most complex and successful in plot and tone."Potter's publisher wanted Mr. Tod to be the first in a new series of Peter Rabbit tales in larger formats with elaborate bindings but Potter disliked the idea. Nonetheless Mr. Tod and its 1913 follower The Tale of Pigling Bland were published in the new formats but the idea was eventually dropped and the ordinary bindings were adopted for reprints. The two tales were the last completely original productions by Potter. She continued to publish sporadically but used decades-old concepts and sketches rather than new images and ideas. 1908Best.-Nr. 158351908. Potter Beatrix. The Roly Poly Pudding. London: Frederick Warne & Co. 1908. First edition. The Roly Poly Pudding published in 1908 is part of Potter's influential cycle of illustrated animal tales that reshaped early twentieth-century children's literature with her unique blend of narrative realism and naturalist illustration. The book reflects the consolidation of Potter's commercial and artistic success following The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Her anthropomorphic characters rendered with botanical and zoological precision contributed to a redefinition of children's publishing as both literary and visual art. The story centers on Tom Kitten and his entanglement in domestic misadventure blending humor discipline and rural English setting in a format accessible to early readers. Potter's illustrations combine full-color plates with black-and-white drawings integrated into pagination reinforcing the narrative's pacing and emotional tone. As part of Warne's uniform series the volume belongs to a publishing phenomenon that established enduring conventions in illustrated juvenile fiction. Octavo. viii 70 pages with nineteen full-color illustrations and numerous black-and-white illustrations. Publisher's red cloth over beveled boards pictorial label to front board. This lovely edition is now cleverly boxed by Mr. Brian Cole. The Tailor of Gloucester is a Christmas children's book written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter privately printed by the author in 1902 and published in a trade edition by >Frederick Warne & Co. in October 1903. The story is about a tailor whose work on a waistcoat is finished by the grateful mice he rescues from his cat and was based on a real world incident involving a tailor and his assistants. For years Potter declared that of all her books it was her personal favourite. Helen Beatrix Heelis née Potter; 28 July 1866 – 22 December 1943 usually known as Beatrix Potter was an English writer illustrator natural scientist and conservationist. She is best known for her children's books featuring animals such as The Tale of Peter Rabbit which was her first commercially published work in 1902. Her books including The Tale of Jemima Puddle Duck and The Tale of Tom Kitten have sold more than 250 million copies. An entrepreneur Potter was a pioneer of character merchandising. In 1903 Peter Rabbit was the first fictional character to be made into a patented stuffed toy making him the oldest licensed character. Born into an upper-middle-class household Potter was educated by governesses and grew up isolated from other children. She had numerous pets and spent holidays in the Lake District developing a love of landscape flora and fauna all of which she closely observed and painted. Potter's study and watercolours of fungi led to her being widely respected in the field of mycology. In her thirties Potter self-published the highly successful children's book The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Following this Potter began writing and illustrating children's books full-time. Potter wrote over sixty books with the best known being her twenty-three children's tales. In 1905 using the proceeds from her books and a legacy from an aunt Potter bought Hill Top Farm in Near Sawrey a village in the Lake District. Over the following decades she purchased additional farms to preserve the unique hill country landscape. In 1913 at the age of 47 she married William Heelis 1871–1945 a respected local solicitor with an office in Hawkshead. Potter was also a prize-winning breeder of Herdwick sheep and a prosperous farmer keenly interested in land preservation. She continued to write illustrate and design merchandise based on her children's books for British publisher Warne until the duties of land management and her diminishing eyesight made it difficult to continue. Potter died of pneumonia and heart disease on 22 December 1943 at her home in Near Sawrey England at the age of 77 leaving almost all her property to the National Trust. She is credited with preserving much of the land that now constitutes the Lake District National Park. Potter's books continue to sell throughout the world in many languages with her stories being retold in songs films ballet and animations and her life is depicted in two films – The Tales of Beatrix Potter 1983 and Miss Potter 2006.
