Description 100th Anniversary Edition published by Frederick Warne & Co. London 2002. A highly desirable limited centenary edition issued to commemorate one hundred years of The Tale of Peter Rabbit one of the most influential and beloved children's books ever published. This special numbered edition is hand-numbered 489 of just 500 copies produced placing it among the scarcest modern Beatrix Potter collectibles. Housed in its original presentation case and complete with the accompanying explanatory leaflet and commemorative bookmark the set was produced specifically for collectors and admirers of Potter's work. As a centenary celebration of Beatrix Potter's enduring masterpiece this edition combines fine production values with rarity and historical significance. 1918rif. 5859London United Kingdom: Frederick Warne & Co. Ltd. 1918. hardcover. Very Good. Beatrix Potter. Publication: London Frederick Warne & Co. Ltd. 1918 Formatting: 16mo pp. 85. Condition Report: Very Good. The original green paper-covered boards remain structurally sound with the delightful pictorial pastedown to the front board still bright and entirely intact displaying only marginal rubbing. The spine exhibits minor bumping and wear to the head and tail yet the delicate white titles are remarkably well-preserved without severe fading or flaking. The binding is somewhat tender but holding firm with no splitting to the joints. Internally the pages present nicely; there is scattered light toning and occasional handling wear commensurate with a children's book of this vintage yet the charming chromolithographic plates including the frontispiece and title vignette remain vibrant clean and free of any tears. Catalogue Note: This is an early printing of Beatrix Potter’s charming countryside tale The Tale of Johnny Town-Mouse. While the copyright page states 1918 the presence of "LTD." following the Frederick Warne & Co. imprint on both the title page and the front board indicates this copy was issued shortly after the publisher incorporated as a limited company in 1919. It retains the beloved formatting and aesthetic of the true first editions complete with a delightful chromolithographic plate by Potter facing the text pages. Uncommon on the open market in such unsophisticated intact condition this copy serves as a lovely early example of Potter's enduring work offering historical charm without the prohibitive premium of a true 1918 first printing. Inspired by Aesop's fable of the town mouse and the country mouse Beatrix Potter's The Tale of Johnny Town-Mouse transports readers to the contrasting worlds of Hawkshead and a tranquil country garden. When Timmy Willie a country mouse accidentally falls asleep in a vegetable hamper he is whisked away to the bustling city and the noisy rich home of Johnny Town-Mouse. Though they try to appreciate each other's distinct ways of life they soon discover that there truly is no place like home. Frederick Warne & Co., Ltd. hardcover
