Cover has some wear fading and soiling. This is one of the University of Florida Monographs in their Social Science series No. 6 Spring 1960. This has become quite a rare item. John K. Mahon received his BA from Swarthmore College in 1934 graduating Phi Beta Kappa. After serving in World War II and working for his family he later returned to his studies and earned his Ph.D. in history from UCLA in 1950. From 1951 to 1954 he served as Civilian Military Historian in the Office of the Chief of Military History in Washington D.C. In 1954 Mahon accepted a teaching position in the history department at the University of Florida. His interest in Military history and the Seminoles led to his three books as well as numerous articles for encyclopedias and historical journals. His work "History of the Second Seminole War" is considered by some as the authoritative modern reference on the little-known but regional and nationally important last great war of Indian Removal east of the Mississippi. Mahon documents the American Seminole and Black cultures leaders and tactics of the war. He served as the chairman of the History Department at the University of Florida from 1965 to 1973. After retiring in 1982 Mahon continued to pursue his interest in history. He held leadership positions in the Florida Historical Society and the Seminole Wars Historic Foundation. This study is concerned with the citizen in his occasional capacity as soldier and with the militia system which controlled him in that capacity. Since the system touched the lives of more individuals than any other function of government save taxpaying it was a powerful influence on early generations of Americans. Moreover inasmuch as the National Guard stems from the elite corps of the militia some of the characteristics of the earlier organization are perpetuated in that vigorous modern institution. In time span this inquiry is limited to just one decade the 1790's. that crucial ten-year period is bonded on its far side by the start of government under the Constitution and on the nears side by the election of Thomas Jefferson in 1800. It is impossible to examine the details of historical development except in limited lots. This decade has some right to be treated as its own entity especially as concerns the militia for during it American leaders chose between a national militia systems and a congeries of state militias. As a result of their choice the basic tone of United States military policy was set for a century thereafter. The term "militia" as used here has two meanings. It sometimes designates the system as a whole other times only segments of the system. Beginning in Chapter 4 the term "standing militia" appears. It refers to those units made up of men who served because they were obliged to. Widely used by contemporaries it distinguished the units raised under the militia system as a form of universal military training from those filled by men who volunteered. 1999rif. 88394London: Pluto Press 1999. Presumed First Edition First printing. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. ix 1 276 pages. Maps. Notes. Appendix I and II. Index. Inscribed by the author on the fep. The inscription reads: "Washington D.C. June 16 1999 For Phyllis & Bob Oakley in friendship - & with many memories. John Cooley". Robert Bigger Oakley March 12 1931 – December 10 2014 was an American diplomat whose 34-year career 1957–1991 as a Foreign Service Officer included appointments as United States Ambassador to Zaire Somalia and Pakistan and in the early 1990s as a special envoy during the American involvement in Somalia. In January 1995 he joined the Institute for National Strategic Studies at the National Defense University. John Kent Cooley November 25 1927 – August 6 2008 was an American journalist and author who specialized in islamist groups and the Middle East. Based in Athens he worked as a radio and off-air television correspondent for ABC News and was a long-time contributing editor to the Christian Science Monitor. Cooley was one of only a handful of Western journalists widely regarded and trusted in the Middle East as an expert on the area's history and politics. He interviewed several of the region's heads of state and was personally acquainted with the senior leadership of the PLO. His many awards include the Council on Foreign Relations' Fellowship for American Foreign Correspondents and the coveted George Polk Award for distinguished career achievement in international reporting. He was a part of the ABC News Prime Time Live team that won a 1990 Emmy for its investigation into the December 21 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103. The book presents Cooley's account of United States policies and alliances from 1979 to 1989 in the Middle East the flaws and the lacunae inherent in US handling of the affairs and their contribution into the emergence of a form of terrorism which continues to affect several regions of the World. Cooley has spent decades in the Middle East and the book is the result of his studies of the subject matter and his interaction with a number of administrators diplomats politicians and the common people. To oppose the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 the US formed an extraordinary anti-communist alliance with militant Islamic forces in Central Asia. In this controversial book John Cooley provides a behind-the-scenes account of this alliance and of how the CIA planned and ran the "holy war" in Afghanistan. Cooley describes the development of US foreign policy and CIA covert activity in the 1980s which facilitated the training and arming of almost a quarter of a million Islamic mercenaries drawn from across the Arab world. Cooley marshals evidence to demonstrate the devastating consequences of this training once the mercenaries returned to their own countries - from the assassination of Sadat the destabilization of Algeria and Chechenya and the emergence of the Taliban to the bombings of the World Trade Center and the US embassies in Africa. Cooley examines the crucial role of Pakistan's military intelligence organization; uncovers China's involvement and its aftermath; the extent of Saudi financial support; the role of "America's most wanted man" the guerrilla leader Osama bin Laden; the BCCI connection; and the CIA's cynical promotion of drug traffic in the Golden Crescent.
