Davis captained the Aurora during Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition making him second in command. He had previously served as Chief Officer on the Nimrod with Shackleton's British Antarctic Expedition 1907-09. "As captain of the Aurora during Mawson's 1911-14 expedition Davis was able to produce one of the few first-hand accounts available in print. His publishers however clearly had wartime difficulties with the book most often seen today with its gilt lettering and decoration badly faded" Taurus. The work provides great detail on the expedition with copious plans maps and illustrations. In 1917 after the stranding of the Endurance in Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition it was Davis in the Aurora who with Shackleton as his supernumerary rescued the Ross Sea Party. Shackleton had initially wanted Davis to captain the Endurance however Davis refused believing the expedition was "foredoomed." The Davis Sea in Eastern Antarctica is named after him. Best.-Nr. 116824London Andrew Melrose 1919. . First edition; 8vo 24 x 18 cm; 8 maps of which 1 folding and 1 plan 83 plates on 42 sheets further in-text maps and illustrations review copy plate and prize book plate to front endpaper; publisher's blue cloth gilt lettering and pictorial vignette to upper board a little rubbed and marked spine faded first gathering slightly weak touch of spotting to edges a very good copy; xxi 183pp. As captain of the Aurora during Mawson's 1911-14 expedition Davis was able to produce one of the few first-hand accounts available in print. Rather like Shackleton's South the book itself is a typical poorly produced war-time volume. The 19111914 expedition encountered many challenges: dangerous weather uncharted coastline and problems with the ship including failing pumps in the engine room. In the Sydney Morning Herald of the 30th May 1929 Close writes of Davis's crucial role in the expedition: '.so much of its safety and success hinged upon his masterly seamanship firm decision of mind and courageous daring in handling the expedition ship Aurora'. Davis as Master of the Aurora made several crucial voyages establishing and relieving the wintering bases at Macquarie Island and on the Antarctic mainland at Commonwealth Bay and the Shackleton Ice Shelf. It was he who had to make the difficult decision whether to wait for blizzards and harsh seas to abate to collect Mawson's party or to relieve the second base party led by Frank Wild. He chose the latter. London, Andrew Melrose, 1919. hardcover

Frontispiece and pictorial dust jacket illustration by Frederic Remington. Edited and arranged by E.A. Brininstool. An outstanding account of the introduction and development of range cattle to Wyoming Montana and Idaho from herds originating in Oregon. With no market in Oregon the rapidly increasing herds were brought eastward. Told from first-hand experience and often in true cowboy jargon this work chronicles the history of these trail drives the later destruction of open-range grazing the development of the Wyoming Cattle Growers Assoc. and the final influx of sheep herds and dry farmers with their resultant effect. "This book has a lengthy chapter on the Johnson County War and the hanging of Cattle Kate and Jim Averill and also contains material on Tom Horn and the Wild Bunch."--Ramon Adams. An excellent work comprised of much source material. Rollinson who was a cowboy and rancher in Wyoming died before this book was published.
