1934Very Good Turkish Paperback. Folio. (33 x 24,5 cm). In Turkish. 12 p. [SHEET MUSIC] Inci'nin kitabi: Piano için 7 parça, Op. 10. Turkish composer Adnan Saygun composed this set of children's pieces in 1934. The paper provides information about the developments in the field of music in the early years of the Republic of Turkey, first generation composers, called "The Turkish Five", including Ahmed Adnan Saygun. The score includes a page of commentary about the composer and work. Ahmet Adnan Saygun was a Turkish composer, musicologist and writer on music. One of a group of composers known as the Turkish Five who pioneered western classical music in Turkey, his works show a mastery of Western musical practice, while also incorporating traditional Turkish folk songs and culture. When alluding to folk elements he tends to spotlight one note of the scale and weave a melody around it, based on a Turkish mode. His extensive output includes five symphonies, five operas, two piano concertos, concertos for violin, viola and cello, and a wide range of chamber and choral works. The Times called him "the grand old man of Turkish music, who was to his country what Jean Sibelius is to Finland, what Manuel de Falla is to Spain, and what Béla Bartók is to Hungary". Saygun was growing up in Turkey he witnessed radical changes in his country's politics and culture as the reforms of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk had replaced the Ottoman Empire -which had ruled for nearly 600 years- with a new secular republic based on Western models and traditions. As Atatürk had created a new cultural identity for his people and newly founded nation, Saygun found his role in developing what Atatürk had begun. It's a symphonic arrangement. 2011New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (27 x 20 cm). In English. 73 p. For Turkish composers then and for quite after a while afterwards, to write "contemporary" music meant to adopt European techniques and follow European models, though with a few adjustments accommodating local tastes and institutions. But gradually in the latter half of the century a tendency to become pathfinders and not just follow Western trends emerged among some composers whose Western orientation was influenced more by American than by European schools. This book describes, with representative examples in musical notation, a series of compositional techniques that were hallmarks of this broad development.

[RARE OTTOMAN EDITION of COSMOGRAPHY by GILLEMIN & BRIEUX] Kozmografya yahud ilm-i ahvâl-i sema. Prep. and translated by Hasan Bedreddin. Amédée Guillemin was a French science writer and a journalist. Guillemin started his studies at Beaune college before taking his final degree in Paris. From 1850 to 1860 he taught mathematics in a private school while writing articles for the Liberal press criticizing the Second French Empire. In 1860, he moved to Chambéry where he became a junior deputy editor of the weekly political magazine La Savoie. After the annexation of Savoy by the French empire, he returned to Paris where he became the science editor of l'Avenir national (The Nation's Future). Guillemin presently started writing books of physics and astronomy which became very popular. He wrote "The Sky" which was translated into many languages. His major work, "The Physical World", consisted of five large volumes. His publisher, Hachette, encouraged him to write a series of booklets about astronomy and physics under the title "Small popular encyclopaedia", a scientifically sound but accessible collection about sciences and their applications. French astronomer Jacques Crovisier from the Observatoire de Paris suggests he may have been a source of inspiration for Jules Verne's 1865 novel, From the Earth to the Moon. Charles Auguste Briot was a French mathematician who worked on elliptic functions. The Académie des Sciences awarded him the Poncelet Prize in 1882. This is the rare translation of "Ele?ments de cosmographie" by Guillemin & Briot in the Turkish / Ottoman world. Second Edition. Özege 11206.; TBTK 11733.; Only two copies in OCLC: 949501098.

Very good; binding somewhat dry; two spots on the front cover. 8vo xvi 1 - 146 2 - adverts pp. 12 lithographic plates. A renown work for its introduction of new orthopedic devices for simple and complex cases. The book is an outline of the application of Amesbury's inventions and transcriptions of individual procedures from his case book. He also notes in the introduction that the various apparatus he refers to may be obtained at the shop of Mr Grafton in King Street Clifton Directory . p. 117 citing later dates and different addresses. Despite the evident hucksterism the treatise is of value for its awareness and treatment of orthopedic problems and collateral issues e.g. soft tissue trauma accompanying broken bones. In all an informed and remarkably adept treatise. Hirsch I p. 113. Printed for Thomas and George Underwood .... hardcover books
