ref. 218559Japan. Twenty one postcards 5 in colour the rest black and white photographic images. Some occasional spotting and browning light wear edges and one creased in places. Presented in a slightly chipped black lacquer box. Overall the collection is in fair to good condition. An interesting miscellaneous collection of twenty one Japanese postcards in a black lacquer box mostly dating from the 1910s and 1920s. Fourteen of these show scenes from a large Japanese military training exercise held in November 1919. Each card has a commemorative stamp of the Army Training Exercise and its date November 1919. There is also a card featuring a painting of the OSK line ship "Amerika Maru" and another with a picturesque Japanese scene and an inset photo of the OSK ship "Konan Maru" possibly a souvenir card given to passengers on the ship. Two other cards are New Year's greeting cards one of them dated 1939 and rather curiously written in Russian although it appears to have been sent from one Japanese man to another. Perhaps the most interesting in the collection is a postcard from Crown Prince Hirohito's 1921 visit to England which shows the Crown Prince shaking hands with one of Lloyd George's grandchildren although the scene is completely stolen by another small grand-daughter who stands in the middle of the photograph completely ignoring the presence of the Crown Prince. The collection also includes a 1948 entry permit to a market run by the Osaka Fruit and Vegetable Association. . unknown

Stanley A. Piltz was a California photographer and publisher of Mid-Century Modern graphic design and printed ephemera. Stanley A. Piltz Company San Francisco issued many Linen Type postcards from the 1930s to the 1950s depicting scenes of California especially of the San Francisco Bay Area and the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition. They consisted primarily of scenic views city town civil and military infrastructures and national monuments views. Linen Type postcards were produced on paper with a high rag content which gave the postcard a fabric type look and feel. At the time this was a less expensive process. Along with advances in printing technique linen type cards allowed for very vibrant ink colors. Stanley Piltz pioneered the Linen Type postcards with his "Pictorial Wonderland Art Tone Series". Curt Teich was the most prominent and largest printer and publisher of Linen Type postcards based in Chicago. Stanley Piltz was one of most prominent publisher at the West Coast. A portion, previously not fully explored, of historical information about Al-Quds/Jerusalem is embodied in the postcards and souvenir objects featuring the city. These items, that were posted or kept by visitors, are assets of cultural heritage and hold anthropological value both for their own sake and for the thoughts and purposes attached to them. "Souvenir of Jerusalem" sheds light on this valuable legacy. The book contains reproductions of postcards, posters, and photographs of various objects that Mr. Murat Kargili had assembled in his personal collection and supplemented with annotations. The book came out in IRCICA s series of studies on al-Quds and Palestine. Earlier IRCICA published albums of historical photographs of al-Quds (Al-Quds/Jerusalem in historical photographs, 2009; Jerusalem in Historical Photographs From Past to Present, 2015) but this is the first publication to focus on postcards and artefacts. The first chapter of the book is reserved to postcards, with annotations on the quarters, structures and scenes of life. The second chapter contains a large variety of printed materials such as posters, trade cards, gravures and maps featuring a fascinating range of subjects and objects. The last chapter is devoted to souvenir objects acquired from Jerusalem. IRCICA is pleased to publish this album which mirrors Al-Quds of the late 19th early 20th centuries. The said album came out in a deluxe edition printed on archival-quality paper. It features more than 150 printed materials such as postcards, maps, engravings, posters, trade cards and pictures of souvenir objects which will take the reader on a journey to Al-Quds; this main sacred city that has seen the longest state rule in its history under Muslims administration.
