James was an English author medievalist scholar and provost of King's College Cambridge 1905-1918 and of Eton College 1918-1936. He is best remembered for his ghost stories which are regarded as among the best in the genre. James redefined the ghost story for the new century by abandoning many of the formal Gothic clichs of his predecessors and using more realistic contemporary settings. However James's protagonists and plots tend to reflect his own antiquarian interests. Accordingly he is known as the originator of the "antiquarian ghost story". James originally read the stories to friends and select students at Eton and Cambridge as Christmas Eve entertainments and received wider attention when they were published in the collections Ghost Stories of an Antiquary 1904 More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary 1911. Later titles include: A Thin Ghost and Others 1919 and A Warning to the Curious and Other Ghost Stories 1925. The first hardback collected edition appeared in 1931. Many of the tales were written as Christmas Eve entertainments and read aloud to friends. This idea was used by the BBC in 2000 when they filmed Christopher Lee reading four stories in a candle-lit room in King's College. James perfected a method of story-telling which has since become known as Jamesian. " - See wikipedia . "Geoffrey Reynolds Day 1888-1916 History master 1911-12 Geoffrey Day was killed aged 28 at the Somme on 27 August 1916. He was born in Malvern Link Worcestershire the only son of Rev. Archibald Day and his wife Jane. In 1891 the family including two sisters Muriel and Hilda were looked after by a cook parlourmaid nurse and governess. Geoffrey attended Marlborough College from 1902-7 going on to Peterhouse Cambridge where he achieved a Double First in History and proxime accessit or runner up for a Varsity Prize. The Gresham magazine welcomes Mr G.R. Day as a new master in October of 1911 to teach history. He seems to have played a full part in the School despite his short stay playing hockey and cricket for masters and local teams and speaking at the debating society. In February 1912 he led a debate on the supernatural expressing his trepidation at addressing the group for the first time but winning his motion by telling ghost stories. School notes for July 1912 congratulate him on his forthcoming election to a Fellowship and Lectureship at Emmanuel College Cambridge adding By his departure we shall have lost not only an interesting teacher but also one who had taken his share in various sides of our school life. Enlisting in 1914 Geoffrey was soon commissioned Lieutenant in the Bedfordshire Regiment. The following August he was wounded several times while serving at Gallipoli and despite a broken jaw showed amazing fortitude in bearing his intense suffering according to an officer who was in the next hospital bed. In July 1916 Lieutenant Day was serving with the Royal Warwickshires on the Western Front near Thiepval. On the day of his death he was in temporary charge of leading his company in an attack when he was wounded in one arm. He went forward but was again struck by a bullet and killed." n July 1916 he was attached to the 1/8th Royal Warwicks on the Western Front. His family received official notification of the death of his son at the beginning of September 1916. His Commanding Officer said that Lieut Day was in temporary charge of his Company and was leading then into an attack when he was wounded in one arm but he went forward and was again struck by a bullet and killed. He was 28 the husband of Jane Day and born in Malvern Link. His father paid tribute to him in the Malvern Link Parish Magazine: Lt G R Day was a good son and a brave soldier of whom his parents and the parish in which he was reared may justly be proud and the sorrow in one in which there is happily no bitterness. You will pray for his acceptance and for his mothers restoration to health and strength.Additions and alterations were made to the chancel screen at St Matthias Church Malvern Link the following year. They were dedicated on Sunday 26th August 1917 at a memorial service to Lieut Geoffrey Reynolds Day. Appropriate hymns were sung including The Supreme Sacrifice set to music by Revd Dr Harris Rector of Colwall. In the afternoon a muffled peal was rung and on Monday the years anniversary of his death a requiem was celebrated. - See Greshams at war London : Edward Arnold 41 & 43 Maddox Street, Bond Street, W. 1912 . hardcover

A German mystic named Christian Armbruster penned this apocalyptic work first published in Germany in either 1813 or 1814. The author predicts the immanent end of days by comparing current events at that time i.e. the rise of the Emperor Napoleon to the prophecies in the Book of Revelation and in the Book of Daniel. Armbruster makes much use of dates and numerical mysticism. American editions of his book contain a frontispiece of a seven headed dragon and are falsely attributed to the more famous mystic Heinrich Jung-Stilling.
