1896réf. 004020original letter. KITCHENER Lord Herbert 1850-1916. Autograph letter signed to William Staveley Gordon concerning the Dongola Expedition and the Nile gunboats. Dongola 24 September 1896. Single sheet folded to form four pages written on all four sides and signed. Old horizontal and vertical mailing folds otherwise very good with bold dark ink throughout. Written from Dongola immediately following the successful conclusion of the Dongola Expedition this important campaign letter sees Kitchener personally credit William Staveley Gordon with the success of one of the defining British military operations in the Sudan. Addressing Gordon a Royal Engineers officer and nephew of General Charles Gordon of Khartoum Kitchener writes: "A great measure of the success of this expedition has been due to you and I wish to let you know how highly I appreciate the work you have done." The letter was written on 24 September 1896 one day after the occupation of Dongola and only days after the Battle of Hafir where Anglo-Egyptian gunboats forced the Mahdist river defences and secured the final advance south. Kitchener discusses the performance of the newly constructed gunboat Zafir noting that she reached the force "only 2 hours before the final advance" before providing a detailed assessment of her capabilities. Although critical of her speed against the current coal consumption and draught he concludes that "the design and arrangement of the steamer is very nearly perfect" and that had she arrived on schedule "she would be a splendid boat." He leaves Gordon to deal with the remaining practical difficulties before adding the telling observation that "The troops are pretty ragged & boots worn out as you may imagine." Kitchener's acknowledgement that "a great measure of the success of this expedition" was due to Gordon represents an exceptionally generous private tribute and demonstrates the importance of Gordon's work in enabling the advance upon Dongola. William Staveley Gordon 1859-1934 served with the Royal Engineers in Egypt and the Sudan and became one of Kitchener's principal officers responsible for the Nile flotilla. As the nephew of General Charles Gordon killed at Khartoum in 1885 his role in the reconquest carried an additional symbolic significance the campaign being widely viewed in Britain as the recovery of the Sudan following the Mahdist victories of the previous decade. . 1912réf. 5021065Berlin Ontario: German Printing and Publishing Co 1912. First Edition. Hardcover. Fair. 1st printing. Oblong green gilt-stamped 4to cloth. Unpaginated but well over 200pps. Illustrated with b/w photos portraits and several ads with color toning or outlining. "Special Articles & Illustrative features by Maxwell Publicity Service." "Made in Berlin." Berlin Ontario changed its name in 1961 to Kitchener according to several sources because of rising anti-German sentiment. Originally in 1833 the name was chosen after the capitol of Prussia. Decorative endpapers. Both hinges are "broken" meaning the paper is cracked at the inside hinges and the webbing there is floppy. I have decided not to attempt a cheap repair on this volume & would recommend the buyer take it to a professional in the bookbinding trade. It is too valuable a book to fix it incorrectly. The cloth is moderately soiled & has some moderate wear at the extremities. The quality of the paper the images and advertising and the details of historical and biographical text is really quite extraordinary. There is no age/musty odor which is usually typical of these sorts of books with glossy page stock. The city fathers & businessmen literally titled "Who's Who" are well represented. The ads are splendid. There is a map of "Rural and Long Distance Lines of the Bell Telephone Company in the Waterloo District." The lithographed photos are excellent; they are sharp & properly exposed. Includes group portraits for example of "29th Regimental Band of Berlin "Grey's Horse Troop" There is a splendid 24" x 9" folding Dominion Day "Berlin Ontario" birds eye photograph highlighting in the caption that Berlin is the "furniture centre of Canada." This is really a quality book that needs some careful hinge repair. Although in a number of Canadian libraries this book hardly ever shows up on the resale market. Because of the hinges I have graded this copy "fair." c. German Printing and Publishing Co hardcover

1916réf. 004186original artifacts. KITCHENER Lord Horatio Herbert. Contemporary Telegraph Tape Announcing His Death in the Sinking of HMS Hampshire with HMS Hampshire Silver and Tortoiseshell Presentation Box. 1915-1916. Two interesting First World War survivals comprising a contemporary telegraph receiver tape reporting the sinking of HMS Hampshire and the death of Lord Kitchener together with a silver and tortoiseshell HMS Hampshire presentation box dated 1915. The paper tape measures approximately 2400 mm when extended. Lacking the opening few letters with several old repairs and creasing from having been rolled but substantially complete and legible considering its fragile format. Good condition. The transmitted report reads with minor losses and imperfections: "His Majesty's ship Hampshire with Lord Kitchener and his staff on board was sunk last night about 8 o'clock to the west of the Orkney Islands either by a mine or torpedo. Four boats were seen by observers on shore to leave the ship. The weather was . and heavy seas were running. Vessels and destroyers at once proceeded to the spot and a party was sent along the coast to search but only some bodies and a capsized boat have been found . As the whole shore has been searched there is no hope of there being any survivors. No . had yet been received from the search party on shore. HMS Hampshire was on her way to Russia." Accompanying the tape is a circular silver-mounted tortoiseshell presentation box approximately 80 mm in diameter and 30 mm deep raised on four feet with hinged lid and cushioned interior. The lid is applied with a crowned Hampshire rose above a ribbon inscribed "H.M.S. HAMPSHIRE" and the date "1915". Hallmarked silver and bearing the retailer's mark of The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd. The firm established in 1880 by William Gibson and John Lawrence Langman was one of London's leading jewellers and silversmiths and was particularly associated with high-quality presentation silver and specially commissioned pieces. The naval insignia and 1915 date indicate that the box was produced as an HMS Hampshire presentation or commemorative piece during the ship's service and significantly before her loss the following year. HMS Hampshire was lost off Orkney on 5 June 1916 while carrying Field Marshal Lord Kitchener and his staff on a diplomatic mission to Russia. Kitchener Secretary of State for War and one of the most recognisable British figures of the First World War was among the members of his party lost with the ship. The tape is particularly striking for the immediacy of its report: the cause is still given as "either by a mine or torpedo" rescue operations remain underway and the message records the rapidly disappearing hope of finding survivors. An uncommon pairing of two contemporary HMS Hampshire survivals. . Good. Soft cover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1916. original artifacts paperback

réf. 43576Sir Charles Moore 1844-1916 Army Officer Engineer and Administrator saying that he has "probably heard that I am to replace you at Souakin. I am very sorry you should leave & would never have accepted the billet had my not doing so been of the least service to you. The way it came about was on my arrival at Suez old West came on board with a telegram stating H.M. Govt wanted to know if I would accept Souakin & if so to wire to Wolff. I asked about you but could find out nothing and I felt sure you had resigned so I wired yes and wet to Alexandria & saw Wolff he then told me and I said that changed the matter but he said if I now refused there was another waiting for the post. I went up to Cairo and saw Gen Stephenson and he told me the same & that I could do you no good and would do myself much harm by refusing. He also said what I hope was the case that he was sure you would see it in the same light. I came home & saw DAG on the subject & Sir R. Thomson and found out an R.A. officer had accepted if I refused the billet and would be appted at once. I hope you think I have done right and I know you will never doubt how much rather I would like it if you could remain supposing you wish to do so." 4 sides 8vo. Junior United Service Club London 18th August In 1874 aged 24 Kitchener was assigned by the Palestine Exploration Fund to a mapping-survey of the Holy Land. By then an officer in the Royal Engineers Kitchener joined fellow officer Claude R. Conder; between 1874 and 1877 they surveyed Palestine returning to England only briefly in 1875 after an attack by locals at Safed in Galilee. Conder and Kitchener's expedition became known as the Survey of Western Palestine because it was largely confined to the area west of the Jordan River. In 1878 having completed the survey of western Palestine Kitchener was sent to Cyprus to undertake a survey of that newly acquired British protectorate. He became vice-consul in Anatolia in 1879. Sutherland was also in the Royal Engineers and worked under Kitchener in Cyprus for 6 years ending in 1886. Kitchener became Governor of the Egyptian Provinces of Eastern Sudan and Red Sea Littoral which in practice consisted of little more than the Port of Suakin in September 1886 He was created Earl Kitchener of Khartoum and of Broome in the County of Kent on June 29th 1914. Unusually provision was made for the title to be passed on to his brother and nephew since Kitchener was not married and had no children. unknown
