1804réf. A37977Erlangen: J.J. Palm 1804. 54; 53; 50; 6 xvi 1-110 2 111-260 2 280 fine hand-col plates on 140 leaves. . HB. 4 vols 4to 19th century half morocco some rubbing to corners and joints raised bands and dec. gilt rules to spines teg marbled endpapers; a few finger marks to the cloth boards. Occasional spotting and browning with foxing to endpapers. A very good set. Editio Nova the second edition of J.C. Schaeffers Icones Insectorum circa Ratisbonam 1766-1779 here accompanied by G.W.F. Panzers supplementary volume which provides a detailed systematic analysis of the plates. The text is in both Latin and German.Jacob Christian Schaeffer 1718-1790 was a distinguished German naturalist whose extensive studies encompassed the flora and fauna of southern Germany with particular emphasis on fungi insects and birds. A professor at Regensburg and a Protestant pastor Schaeffer successfully combined his ecclesiastical and academic responsibilities with an enduring passion for natural history. His extensive correspondence included leading European naturalists such as Carl Linnaeus reflecting his considerable standing within the scientific community of his time. The work is particularly notable for its 280 finely detailed delicately hand-coloured engraved plates based on original drawings by Stephan Loibel c.1725-1775 and H. Fische. Loibel was a Regensburg Bildermahler - a specialist picture painter whose work included highly detailed natural-history illustrations. Loibel and Fisches depictions record more than 2000 insects from the region surrounding Regensburg in southern Germany. The plates were engraved by a distinguished circle of craftsmen associated with Schaeffer including Johann Nepomuk Maag c.1724-1800 Gustav Philipp Trautner 1739-1812 and Johann Gottlieb Fridrich 1742/43-1809 and others. Their finely executed copperplate work translated the original drawings into the detailed printed plates which were subsequently brought to life through delicate hand-colouring.This edition is significant not only for its remarkable documentation of the insect fauna of the Regensburg region but also for Panzers important scholarly contribution. Combining meticulous observation systematic classification copperplate engraving and hand-colouring the work stands as an exceptional example of the close relationship between science art and book production in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.Nissen ZBI 3629; Horn-Schenkling 19050 16731. 1965réf. 16402Washington D.C. 1965-1969. Very good. Group of ten 3 binders containing primarily inter-office memos from Fred Panzer dating from January 1966 to January 1969. Most measuring 8.5" x 11 primarily carbon some typed and some photocopy on a variety of paper stocks. Various other documents: photocopied reports newspaper and magazine articles etc. Also includes: two 3 binders dating from July 1966-Feb 1967 containing memos by or to Tad Cantril; two 3 binders containing research for a position paper addressing the credibility gap; two 1.5 binders containing information on administration accomplishments from 1965; two folders containing transcripts of the LBJ Library Oral History Project interview with Panzer; and relating ephemera. Approximately four linear feet in all. Original binders unsalvageable and now perished; rehoused in new three-ring binders maintaining original divisions and order. Two volumes exhibiting moderate rodentia loss to page edges not effecting any text. Overall very good. An exhaustive archive of polling public opinion and related papers including memos and other internal communications research materials and like belonging to Fred Panzer President Lyndon B. Johnsons chief pollster. More than any other president that preceding him Johnson relied on polling. Similar statements could also have been made of JFK and arguably Truman and even FDR but Johnson commissioned more than four times the number of polls as Kennedy. And while Kennedy utilized polling primarily in crafting his message LBJ was the first president to extensively use polls in his decision- and policy-making. Therefore polling and by extension Fred Panzer helped shape the presidency in a way that hadnt been seen before. Ten binders from the desk of Fred Panzer make up the bulk of the archive creating an exhaustive survey of his work at the White House. Several additional binders of related materials research file copies etc. round out the archive. Together a comprehensive look at executive branch polling both its directions and effects during a particularly turbulent time in American history all from the point of view of a man at the center of modern political public opinion. A binder-level inventory is available on request. unknown books

In four monumental photographic murals reproduced in large gatefolds and many related portraits he portrayed Andy Warhol’s gender-bending Factory with Viva and Candy Darling; Abbie Hoffman and the radical agitators of the Chicago Seven; Allen Ginsberg’s family friends and fellow artists; and the U.S. Mission Council in Saigon alongside searing portraits of victims of the Vietnam War. The photographs are accompanied by images of archival material including Avedon’s diaries correspondence and contact prints. Major essays explore Avedon’s penetrating incursions into the history and spirit of these tumultuous years. . 2012. 1419705636 . Abrams hardcover

Signed, without inscription, by author atop front free endpaper. pp. 248. "A compelling indictment of war by a man who knows it as few men do! Sergeant Reinhold Pabel of the 115th Panzer Grenadiers of Hitler's First Army switched lives when he escaped from an Illinois prisoner of war camp in 1945. The man who faced Russian guns in the Ukraine, battled the Americans in Italy and looked out through the barbed wire of a prisoner of war compound in the United States, became, in a remarkably short time, a respected American businessman whose past was unsuspected by his friends, associates or local police. When the FBI finally tracked him down, they found only Philip Brick, quiet proprietor of one of Chicago's North Side bookstores. His is a vivid, eyewitness account of the Russian campaign as seen by a slogging German foot soldier. He was transfered to Sicily and Italy where he was taken prisoner and sent to North Africa, then Camp Grant in Illinois, from which he escaped before being captured in 1953. The wonder of Pabel's story lies in his human touch. Without wild fanatic shouts of protest or of flag waving, he presents and illustrates a concept of vital importance to today's world." - dust jacket.
